The Championship Cup (or European Rugby Champions Cup) features the finest domestic rugby teams from England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa and Wales. The competition usually begins between October and December, when 24 teams play one another during the pool stage. The top 16 teams then progress to the knockout stages and the final is held in May.

Just like other rugby union tournaments, the Champions Cup awards points based on match outcomes. A winning team receives four points and drawing teams receive two points. Additionally, the competition uses the bonus points system whereby teams earn one point for scoring at least four tries or for losing a game by seven points or less.

Do you think you can predict this year’s winner? Want to see if other rugby fans share your point of view? Vote for your favourites in our Champions Cup standings poll or comment below to discuss your opinions with our rugby community.
