14-man Toulouse pull off Parisian miracle

Toulouse overcame the first-half dismissal of Zack Holmes to beat Racing 92 22-21 in a thrilling Heineken Champions Cup quarter-final.

Holmes was sent off for a high tackle on Juan Imhoff midway through the first half with his side trailing 10-7, but tries from Maxime Medard and Antoine Dupont, his second of the game, gave Toulouse the upper hand.

Maxime Machenaud reduced the gap to three points with two penalties in the second half and although a penalty from Thomas Ramos gave Toulouse a 22-16 lead, the home side had a chance to snatch victory when Camille Chat went over in the corner.

However, Machenaud could not land the difficult conversion and the home side also had a try from Virimi Vakatawa disallowed in the closing minutes after he was penalised for an infringement at the lineout.

Toulouse will face defending champions Leinster in the semi-final following Leinster’s victory over Ulster on Saturday.

But nothing kills a game dead like a team using drop goals as points accumulation. Very rarely does that happen though.

Eight All Blacks released to play opening round of NPC

They should be releasing all of them back to the NPC. Most of them seem to pick up more injuries during training than actually playing matches anyway. When did NZ become so scared of injuries that out comes the cottonwool the moment the NPC comes into view. If anything, injuries to established players have been a blessing in disguise in recent years, finally giving young players a chance to shine where veterans have been skating by on reputation and test cap numbers.

So, these 8 are the outer-fringe players who will probably hardly see any rugby in black for the rest of the season or are about to be replaced by returning players.

Meanwhile, some like Billy Proctor, if selected for the nest Test won’t have played for 5-6 weeks at all. And then if they look rusty (which they will be) it’ll be those not in the protected ‘leadership group’ that will pay the selection price if things turn pear shaped.

But you know that’s not the case.

If they were the top side of course, yes, but my point was that they rotate with the Lions. As in I don’t think it’s NZRs or anyones choice. Like Dans saying, if it was choice they would probably choose someone else that would be more marketable (a country who’s fans would be interested in it), but also that if it was the France side that toured, they may be playing Aus or SA instead. Can’t recall who we had in 2021.

Drop goals are for those that can't score trys. Wilkinson was an average drop kicker compared to Naas Botha, Janie de Beer and Joel Stransky.

But none can compare to Hugo Porta who could drop kick off both feet whenever he felt the urge. He was revered in a soccer mad country sharing equal status with Maradona and the WC winning team of ‘78.

Wilkinson was another pommy media hero who is more myth than substance.
