Creevy quashes Top 14 speculation by extending London Irish deal
Former Argentina captain Agustin Creevy has quashed pre-Christmas speculation that he was set for a switch to France by agreeing to extend his current deal with London Irish in the Gallagher Premiership. It had been rumoured in December that the 36-year-old was potentially in line for a move to either Top 14 leaders Bordeaux or promotion chasers Bayonne.
However, those links have now been put to bed after the Argentine hooker took up the offer of an extension at London Irish where he has been in scintillating form this season and currently tops the league’s try-scoring chart with an impressive nine tries.
Since arriving at the club in August 2020, the hooker has made 38 appearances and scored 16 tries. “I am delighted to be staying at London Irish because this club has become a second home for me and my family,” said Creevy.
“Since the first day I walked into the training ground, everyone has made me feel a part of the London Irish family. The supporters always give me a brilliant reception at matches, and I can’t thank them enough for it. The club is going in the right direction and I will do my best to help that continue.”
London Irish boss Declan Kidney added: “We are excited to have Agustin staying with us here at Hazelwood. He is a popular member of the squad and provides valuable experience to our team, both on and off the pitch. We look forward to seeing more of Agustin in the London Irish jersey.”
In a November 2020 interview with RugbyPass, Creevy, who still retains hopes of representing Argentina at the 2023 World Cup, explained why London Irish were the club for him after he finished up in Super Rugby. “To be honest, when Jaguares ended I had another opportunity in France and in England too but the most serious offer was London Irish and I said yes, I want to play in London Irish for this team, for the history of the team and because it is in London.
“London is a beautiful city for me and for my family and I have two friends who play in Harlequins, two friends from home. That is really good because I have company with them too.”
