Scan results on shoulder injuries sustained in last Saturday's defeat to the All Blacks have not only ruled both skipper Alun Wyn Jones and back row Ross Moriarty out of the remainder of the Autumn Nations Series with Wales but the pair must also undergo surgery to rectify their respective problems.

The setbacks don't end there either for the heavily injury-hit Wales as Taulupe Faletau has also been released from Wayne Pivac's squad on the same day that Bath, his English Premiership club, confirmed he would be joining a Welsh region - most likely Cardiff - next season in order to bolster his Test career ahead of the 2023 World Cup .

Three players have been called into the Wales squad ahead of next Saturday's clash with the Springboks, Shane Lewis-Hughes, Rhys Davies and the now isolation-free Willis Halaholo. A statement issued by the WRU on Tuesday evening updating their squad read: "Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones and back row Ross Moriarty underwent scans on Monday due to shoulder injuries sustained last Saturday in the game against New Zealand.

Dan Biggar on why the Autumn Nation Series is the most brutal

"The scans revealed that neither Jones nor Moriarty will be able to participate further in the Autumn Nations Series and will therefore be released from the squad. Both players will require surgery with an estimated recovery period of a number of months respectively.

"Bath’s Taulupe Faletau has also been released from the Wales squad. Faletau’s ankle injury, sustained while training at Bath, will preclude him from taking part in the Autumn Nations Series.

"Centre Willis Halaholo will re-join the squad on Friday, having spent ten days in isolation after testing positive for Covid. Cardiff’s Shane Lewis-Hughes and Ospreys’ Rhys Davies have been called into the squad. The 23-year-old Lewis-Hughes has three Test caps to his name, having made his international debut against Scotland in October 2020.

"He also featured against Ireland and England in last year’s Autumn Nations Cup. Lock Davies, 22, was called into the summer squad but has yet to make his senior debut for Wales."
