ARU expresses condolences after death of amateur rugby player

The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) has offered its deepest condolences after amateur rugby player Lachlan Ward tragically died during a match.

Ward, 25, was playing for local side Warringah Rats at Pittwater Rugby Park in Sydney on Saturday when he died.

He is believed to have suffered a heart attack and paramedics were unable resuscitate him.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of Lachlan's passing in such tragic circumstances on the Rugby field yesterday afternoon," ARU CEO Bill Pulver said in a statement on Sunday.

"Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Lachlan's family, his team-mates, friends, and all at the close-knit Warringah Rugby Club and NSW Rugby Union.

"Outside of Lachlan's family, there were many witnesses to yesterday's events at the ground and those brave players, volunteers, medical and club staff who assisted Lachlan are also in our thoughts today.

"We will work with NSW Rugby Union to support all those affected by this tragedy."

New South Wales Rugby Union (NSWRU) CEO Andrew Hore added: "It is terribly sad news to learn of Lachlan's passing and our thoughts are with Lachlan's family, his friends and all who knew him.

"The Warringah Rats are a tight-knit club, who will need time coming to terms with what's happened. They are a strong club and will rally and support Lachlan's family and each other during this difficult time.

"The NSW Rugby Union will be there to support all those effected by this tragedy in the time ahead and we know the rugby community will be there to help as well."
