Boks fans and even a former player go after Luke Pearce in wake of loss

Despite what many neutrals saw as an exceptional refereeing performance – Springboks fans and even a former player have gone after Luke Pearce in the wake of their shock defeat to the All Blacks in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Ian Foster’s New Zealand ran out 35-23 victors over the Boks in the second of their two games on South African soil.

It’s a win that few predicted after a display of dominance from the hosts a week earlier and it hasn’t gone down well with SA fans – who have sought to scapegoat Pearce for the loss.

Even former Springboks were getting in on the act, with Breyton Paulse posting: “The Boks certainly didnt deserve to win tonight but the ref made some really bad calls at critical times that took our oemf away, not good at all!!”

Dylan Jack wrote: “Luke Pearce yellow carded Willemse for a first cynical infringement. Now he’s giving warnings to the All Blacks for cynically collapsing the Bok maul.”

And there were plenty more in that vein:

The complaints from South African fans were in stark contrast to neutrals, who widely lauded a superb performance from the Gallagher Premiership whistler.

RugbyPass’ Ben Smith wryly noted: “I, for one, am disappointed Luke Pearce missed 25 tackles out there on the field. Someone, somewhere, should do something about that.”

https://twitter.com/bensmithrugby/status/1558743967730057216

Respected Australian journalist Christy Doran noted: “Luke Pearce’s officiating of last night’s Springboks- All Blacks Test was superb. Well done. Clear, concise and wanting the game to be played at speed. Great Test. The Rugby Championship is alive. Great drama about this year’s tournament.”

Journalist Steffan Thomas wrote: “I personally thought Luke Pearce was flawless. Can’t think of a single decision he got wrong. Top class performance.”

Squidge Rugby observed how Pearce – like Nigel Owens before him – is nearly always involved in exceptionally good matches: “If you’re ever trying to figure out which fixtures will be absolute bangers, it’s easier to just search for matches Luke Pearce is refereeing than check which teams are playing.”

South African journalist Brendan Nel wrote that: “I didn’t have an issue with Luke Pearce’s reffing. I may have disagreed with a few decisions, but nothing major. Telling point was the obstruction – we didn’t have a great angle on the big screen, so want to watch that again before commenting” and later “Sorry, won’t jump on the bash the ref bandwagon. Definitely didn’t get the rub of the green but the Boks lost 4 lineouts on their own throw, they were poor defensively. The bomb squad backfired through injury and we were left with just one option for the aerial battle.”

Newcastle Falcons media manager Mark Smith Tweeted that Pearce’s performance was top draw: “Man of the match: Luke Pearce. Refereeing masterclass.”

Former Northampton Saints’ lock and now head of player affairs at the RPA Christian Day observed: “Enjoyed that first half. NZ looking a lot more like the All Blacks. SA back into it though just before HT and looking like they have solidified the set piece with an early change or two. Luke Pearce communicates very well and keeping the pace of game high.”

Pearce – at just 34 – is widely seen as one of the best referees in the world, and his performance in Ellis Park yesterday will only further that reputation, despite what some South African fans might say.

The ref was shocking. I switched off after the Mapimpi try was disallowed. So obvious the ref was cheating. As for 'neutrals', we have english (ref) and New Zealanders (beneficiaries) saying he was great. Hard to find anyone else.

What a load f moaners

There were foibles from the ref for both teams.

He missed a couple of forward passes between Boks forwards, in both halves, and seemed to allow the SA backs to be slightly offside (like last week) for many defensive manoeuvres. He also allowed the Bokke forwards to go across rucks, off their feet too often, especially later on.

Overall though, I believe it was the best reffing performance involving the ABs this year so far.

Top notch Mr. Pearce.

Yes a fair game, probably had a note from world rugby about the Boks aerial tactics which were illegal in the first test

Everyone loves bashing the Boks and saying how arrogant Bok fans are. What a negative clickbait style article to post on this website, clearly posted to wind people up and provoke a reaction. Congratulations on being a low class journalist.

I think the yellow in the first few minutes was exceptionally harsh. Anyone who thinks that was clearly a cynical action is seriously one eyed. Thats what started the Saffa fans looking at the ref. Besides that the ref denied a try to Lukhanyo Am after a clear Sam Whitelock rip, which he then called a knock on. The call on Jayden Hendricks obstruction was right but unlucky. The 6’6 Kiwi lock really struggled to handle the bump from the 5ft9 Bok scrumhalf. It changed the game from a 2 point game to a 10 point game. But dont gimme this “neutral” observers kuk. Show me a Kiwi, Ozzie or Brit who wanted the boks to win and I will show you a liar.

That was a disgraceful yellow, nz does that often and don’t get a yellow. I was keen for the Boks to win and am from downunder

K
KC 1065 days ago

The obstruction would never have been a try anyway because the last pass was 5m forward.

Ruby 1066 days ago

The only obvious call he got wrong was when he didn't give one of the Boks a yellow card for a really bad high tackle, NZ scored and he didn't go back for it.

Come on Saffas, unlike you to blame the ref when you lose. A couple of iffy decisions sure but that's par for the course. I thought he reffed the game pretty well, better than last week's pedantic twit.

I remember seeing a headline last week which read, "South African Rugby Calls Out 'Whinging All Blacks'"

P
PR 1066 days ago

I thought the refereeing really helped the Boks as he blew the whistle so often against both sides making the game so stop start which gave the unfit Bok forwards plenty of time to get their breath back. Unfortunately for the Boks, Willemse and Am's fantastic attacking play actually helped exhaust the big Bok forwards as they tried to keep up and support them.

what about the ripped ball that was judged as a knock on, when Am scored off the dropped pass? that was early on in the game.

we didn't have a great game but that was one wrong call as far as I understand the rules of the game. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

is a ripped ball a knock on?

He then told Kolisi to back off when he questioned it. No review at all.

There does seem to be a rhetoric about SA and ref complaints now. Don't know if this is spin doctoring by media outlets or if the Rassie thing has put a target on our backs (perhaps there are a lot of people who complain but in fairness if there is some merit to what's being said then it's a free world and freedom of speech should stand true (perhaps other countries' fans do the same!?). In fairness, there's always something to say by someone.

Again, we threw the game away with some poor play (lineouts, starting lineup, etc) but in my opinion it is a game of fine margins. One cannot say it was a "perfect" game by the ref if there were some errors and I'm sure one might find a few.

HOFer 1065 days ago

As soon as the ball was ripped, Pearce played advantage for a knock-on.

The ABs knew they had a free shot, so went wide. If there was no advantage, you don’t know whether they would still try to do what they did.

Moot point entirely about knock-on call.

D
Drew 1065 days ago

For me telling Kolisi to back off was the indicator that he knew he was wrong but persisted. It also showed disregard and disrespect for the captain of our team. The way he reacted to the Jayden Hendrickse BB incident was telling as well. He knew there was obstruction but ignored it until the TMO stepped in.

GrahamVF 1065 days ago

A ripped ball is a knock on if the ripper and the carrier are both still touching the ball when it comes free.

D
David 1066 days ago

Perhaps they SA should have had the ref who refereed the welsh v SA first test ......karma

G
GrahamVF 1066 days ago

Boks were definitely their own worst enemies. Up with a few minutes to play against 14 men and still lose. They deserve every point they gave away. Far too many mistakes. In a close game the side that makes the least mistakes wins. That was the AB's. Mapimpi's try should have stood. The No 9 stood dead still. I've watched it over and over. He never moved a foot. He is under no obligation to get out of anyone's way. And that would probably have changed the game. But that would just have masked a diabolical performance by the Boks. The wonder was, just like last week when the roles were reversed, The AB's if they were half good would have put 40 points over the hapless Boks just like the Boks should have last week. The SH has fallen behind Ireland and France. No doubt about that France would have put both those teams away yesterday.

I rate luke pearce as one of best refs around at moment ,in an average game of rugby there will be a number of decisions that will always come down to interpretation,i thought pearce was fair and consistent, all you can ask for.

M
Michael 1066 days ago

Amazing that people attack the ref who had a very good game

D
Damian 1066 days ago

Yes we did not hear new Zealanders complain we just heard the head coach make slanderous and ridiculous statements about the ref. But hey if it was Rassie saying something he world would be up in arms.

G
GARTH 1066 days ago

Never known SA supporters to be so bias, you came second on the day by a better team and the reff was consistent. Last week when we lostyou didn't hear us complain about anything but our own silly mistakes.

It appears that SA supporters are now the worst complainers and always blame the reff or who eve, not their own teams mistakes and judgment. Didn't hear any of the SA players complain about the reff, don't be sour lovers as the Aussies lie in waiting for you in a fortnight.

G
GrahamVF 1066 days ago

Agreed. Just like the Boks stuffed the AB's last week when they couldn't handle the heat in the air. Two very average sides which would right now be put to the sword by the top NH sides. And we'd better get that into our heads.

C
Chris 1066 days ago

This is rubbish reporting. After any team’s loss you can quote thousands blaming the referee. So this means all South Africa is saying this? What rubbish! Get a grip rugbypass!

I
IS 1066 days ago

All you need to do is look at the Facebook and instagram posts you'll see for yourself also south Africa only blame the ref constantly

S
Snash 1066 days ago

He definitely blundered disallowing Mapimpi try after judging Hendriks obstructed Whitelock whereas Whitelock shoukd have been nominated for an Oscar, plus appeared to turn blind eye to same AB infringement as got Willemse a yellow. But hard to imagine diff outcome given how ABs played in last 20

D
Damian 1066 days ago

Well let's see the penalty that should've clearly been a penalty try. Mapimpi try and the game could've been completely different.

P
Pn 1066 days ago

Reading Mark Keohane's review, it sounds like he backs Luke Pearce, not criticises him? As a neutral, i thought he reffed very well and consistently for both teams in a tough arena.

J
Jerry 1066 days ago

I'd agree with that Pete. I'm not hearing a lot of ref criticism here in SA, aside from that 50:50 obstruction call which was the game-changer in my opinion. That was a 10 point swing. Aside from that marginal call, he was brilliant and managed a supurb and highly entertaining Test between two old foes. We lost to the slightly better team on the day.
