'This team looks underdone': Ex-Highlander questions the Blues' 2025 approach

The reigning Super Rugby Pacific champions, the Blues, have yet to win a game this season, after two defeats at the hands of the high-flying Chiefs and the Highlanders in Dunedin.

Vern Cotter and his side haven’t put together an 80-minute performance, sitting at the bottom of the Super Rugby Pacific ladder after two rounds with zero points.

The Blues led both the Chiefs and the Highlanders at halftime in their respective fixtures, but Cotter will be disappointed with the second-half performances of his side, especially in Dunedin as the Highlanders were down to 13 players at one point.

Former All Black Stephen Donald believes that the game style used by Cotter in 2024, hasn’t worked in the first two games of the season.

“I think the fact that the forward pack has lost a couple of big boys, and Sam Darry is not there, Akira Ioane is not there. Hoskins went back last week, but those boys suited how Vern had them playing, and that was get to the 22-meter line,” Donald said on The Breakdown for Sky Sport.

“Last year they went up the middle with Caleb Clarke off the first phase, and then they swung around and beat you down until you there’s nothing left.

“This year nothing’s changed, apart from a couple of personnel not being there as far as that forward pack goes.

“Suddenly, teams are able to withstand that onslaught or lack of and they’re not getting the momentum around the corner like they were.”

60-Test former All Black Jeff Wilson is interested to see what Cotter does with All Black first-five Beauden Barrett, who has played both games to start the season at fullback.

Barrett, who was on a sabbatical last year in Japan when the Blues won the 2024 title, played for the All Blacks at first five for parts of the end-of-year Northern Tour and now is at fullback for the Blues.

“They had Cole Forbes playing at fullback last year. Beauden Barrett is an All Black first five, he’s the guy that can run the ship and at the moment, I feel as though he’s a little bit mixed about how he wants to play and how they want to play because they are so dangerous,” Wilson told the Breakdown.

“They need to play a little bit more creatively, I think they need to actually work out a style of football.”

Sky Sports rugby commentator Joey Wheeler questions Wilson’s point, saying that more time in the jersey for Harry Plummer and Beauden Barrett, should iron out the cracks that have shown in the first couple of weeks in Super Rugby Pacific.

“I just want to go back to your point around bringing Beauden Barrett back into 10 for the Blues, we talk about continuity and time in the saddle.

“This team looks underdone in terms of how they want to play the game with Harry Plummer and Beauden Barrett.

“You want to make a change in the most pivotal position in that team and bring back Beauden Barrett, who was on sabbatical last year, Harry Plummer led this team.

“They’re struggling to find the game as it is, is that the right time to be making that decision?”

Blues don’t have the stomach for competition footy. They climbed to the top of the tree last year, they can’t maintain the intensity to stay there, though.

It was evident in the NPC last year that their players were relaxing after the effort of winning SR.

Yeah I thought Sotutu was into everything though, which is different/improved from last year. Hopefully he can help lead the way as NZ rugby doesn’t need another pathetic Blues team at the moment.

1. They arent underdone. They and Cotter are just stupid employing identical tactics as they did last year and not expecting that their opponenrs would have devised a way to counter it. 2. Bareet is just reverting to type..Hoof and hope tactical kicking because he cant think what else to do. Tactical kicks need to go out, trap defenders with it or be contestible for regaining the pill. It’s as much a weakness in theNZ game as executing dropkicks and Barrett is a shocker.

Drop Barrett and put a proper fullback at 15. One who won’t gift the opposition easy points with aimless kicking.

Frankly, he’s not the only ‘star’ in that team who should be given a selection fright.

Someone will eventually have to tell Ioane the experiment at 13 has ended and if he spits the dummy..well so be it.

Leinster cleanse palette with record URC scoreline against Zebre

My name is Solenn Bonnet, and I am a single mother navigating the challenges of raising my two-year-old child while trying to make ends meet. I came across a trading platform that promised astonishing daily profits of 18%. The allure of such a high return on investment was too tempting to resist, and I found myself drawn into cryptocurrency trading. Excited by the prospect of financial freedom, I invested a significant amount of my savings, totaling over 5.7 BTC. However, what started as a hopeful venture quickly turned into a nightmare. The platform was a scam, and I lost everything I had invested. The emotional toll of this loss was immense; I felt devastated and helpless, struggling to provide for my child and keep up with my bills. In my desperate attempt to recover my funds, I sought help from various recovery experts. Unfortunately, I encountered numerous fraudulent individuals who claimed they could help me retrieve my lost money. Each time I reached out, I was met with disappointment and further scams, which only deepened my despair. Last year was one of the most challenging periods of my life, filled with anxiety and uncertainty about my financial future. Feeling overwhelmed and at a loss, I confided in a close friend from church about my situation. She listened compassionately and shared her own experiences with financial difficulties. Understanding my plight, she introduced me to Tech Cyber Force Recovery, a group of skilled hackers known for their expertise in recovering lost funds. Skeptical yet hopeful, I decided to reach out to them as a last resort. Their services came at a higher cost, but my friend generously offered to help me with a partial payment. I was amazed by how quickly they responded and began the recovery process. Their team was professional, efficient, and incredibly supportive throughout the entire ordeal. To my relief, they successfully recovered more than I had lost to those heartless scammers. This was truly transformative, and I felt a sense of relief and gratitude that I hadn’t felt in a long time. I strongly encourage anyone who has faced similar challenges or fallen victim to scams to reach out to Tech Cyber Force Recovery. If you’ve invested in a fraudulent platform like I did, they are highly capable of helping you reclaim your hard-earned money. Don’t lose hope; there is a way to recover what you’ve lost.
