Brumbies elder statesman's career could be over

The career of Australia’s oldest Super Rugby player appears to be over after Brumbies hooker Josh Mann-Rea suffered a serious knee injury.

Mann-Rea left the field during the Brumbies’ 19-17 win over Stormers at the weekend with the 38-year-old suspected to have torn his anterior cruciate ligament.

The injury typically requires nine months of rehabilitation.

The two-Test Wallaby is off-contract at the end of the season.

Mann-Rae joined former Brumbies George Smith and Radike Samo, earlier this season, as the only Australians to play Super Rugby past the age of 38.

He was a later bloomer who made his Super Rugby debut at the NSW Waratahs as a 32-year-old in 2012, and has been at the Brumbies for the past seven seasons.

Despite being largely used as reserve throughout his career, Mann-Rea made his international debut against South Africa in 2014, but only played one more Test.

Back-up hooker Connal McInerney has flown to Argentina to join the Brumbies for their clash against the Jaguares in Buenos Aires on Sunday.

Isn’t there a case to say that Razor made a very cool and objective assessment on what was going to best support his transition agenda as he got his feet under the table? Taking the leadership, mentoring and role model benefits Cane provided along with TJ’s experience following Roigards injury? On that basis he would be entitled to make exactly the same judgement for any player that’s still eligible, regardless of contracts already signed.

I remembered him from his time with Tigers & England and being slightly surprised he was allowed to slip away given the trajectory he’d taken to the top, he appeared to be rated very highly at the time. Your point on repaying the faith shown to him by the Force reminds me of Duhan van der Merwe’s comments about being signed for Edinburgh and taken in by Scottish rugby when he was struggling with injury and languishing at Montpellier. That one certainly worked out pretty well for all concerned too!

It’s a big call for Reiko to try to be as good as Jordie has been. Anything other than better will be ridiculed with Johnny Sexton leading the orchestra.


On an aside, given the Leinster/ABs bromance, perhaps the AB (2nd) XVs can play Leinster during the Autumn Internationals as well as Munster.

Not to mention he was dropped for almost all of the EOYT once Roigard got fit. Just a game in Japan, where he heading off to the following year, and a final farewell in Italy. Roigard and Ratima took up almost all gametime that tour, and Hotham was included in the AB XV tour, so he got experience there.

That’s a real tough game to call. UBB look awesome going forward for sure but Toulouse rolled up their sleeves in the face of a Toulon team that wouldn’t go away. One thing that does stand out though, IF Toulouse follow up victory in Toulon with a win in Bordeaux they will have made it to the final on real merit and be very much battle hardened for Leinster. Might this just set the stage for yet another Leinster meltdown…?

It really does look bleak when reading the stats and it makes you wonder what it is about the psyche of Irish Rugby that sees them fall so often at the final hurdles, particularly when you set the Ireland wc record alongside that picture?


That said, if they bottle it again this year from this position, then they might as well pack up and call it a day!

Rassie once said he really likes to find a top player from a minor school. He knows how to tackle because he’s had a lot of practice.top rugby schools like Grey College Paarl BH Paarl Gym etc spend much of the game attacking and seldom have to do much tackling. A classic example is Damien D’Allende who was at Milnerton High - not a traditional rugby school. He came to attention because of his ferocious defence. The attacking skills were added much later. Tackling is so much part of the SA rugby psyche it makes it so much easier to base the national game around ultra aggressive defence. At provincial level there are various nuances in attacking strategy but every province has the same D mindset. The enthusiasm with which tackling is embraced in SA makes Jacques D methods easy to adopt in every province from NTvl to SWDistricts. When we sat down after a school game we would recount our big tackles long before clever offloads.
