Bulls run out of steam as Stormers clinch heavyweight URC derby
The Stormers claimed bragging rights in their heavyweight all-South African URC clash with the Bulls in Cape Town. The hosts ran out 19-17 winners at DHL Stadium to cement their place at the top of the championship’s South African Shield against their closest rivals.
A dull first half received lift off in the closing seconds when the Bulls were held up over the line and the Stormers used the resulting drop out to launch an attack that ended with a fine finish by flanker Hacjivah Dayimani.
Wing Canan Moodie responded for the visitors from Pretoria by finishing a dynamic attack in the 51st minute, but the excitement quickly subsided as play became edgy once more.
Two penalties by Manie Libbok and a Damian Willemse drop goal propelled the Stormers back in front before a late Elrigh Louw try placed the outcome in doubt.
However, the closing stages were played in the Bulls’ half and they were unable to score again.
