Bulls sign 'one of the most exciting players in the country'

Promising loose-forward Phumzile Maqondwana has been signed by Jake White’s Bulls, a player they describe as ‘one of the most exciting players in the country’.

Maqondwana will join recent recruits Sbu Nkosi, Ruan Vermaak and Dylan Smith at the Pretorian side.

The 25-year-old joins from the Airlink Pumas, who were recently named Carling Currie Cup winners, where he has made a significant contribution since 2019.

      The former Selborne College student has committed to playing for the Bulls for the next two years and is expected to contribute to their Carling Currie Cup, Heineken Champions Cup, and Vodacom United Rugby Championship campaigns.

      In 2018 he was signed by the Lions before heading to Mbombela to feature for the Pumas in 2019. Not only was he a standout performer for the Mpumalanga side, but his leadership qualities also stood out as he captained the side on a number of occasions.

      “We are very happy to have signed Phumzile Maqondwana for the next two years at the Vodacom Bulls,” confirmed Vodacom Bulls director of rugby, Jake White.

      “He is definitely one of the most exciting players in the country at the moment. We have no doubt that he will add to the depth of our squad and make a great contribution, both as a player and a leader in the upcoming season and beyond.”

      In France rugby at school is very rare.

      The more often, it's a seven version on a reduce pitch. Sports teachers favorite sport is handball and it's a blessing for it and a problem for the others. So it's hard to compare. I think the NZ school rugby system you describe is close to the french one in lower levels and to what english RFU would have try to copy if the clubs had been OK…

      Just 80% is fine.


      England did 89% in 2020

      France did 100% in 2022

      Ireland did 92% in 2022

      South Africa did 85% back to back 2023 and 2024.


      So +80% has been done plenty.


      Only knew Zeland hasn’t done >80% in the last 6 completed seasons. Average of 68% 2019 - 2024.


      This year you’ll do it I reckon.

      I’d say his plan is play the next world cup, try and get a winner’s medal, then immediately hop the plane back to France and turn out for Tonga in 3031 while also cashing those club cheques.


      I don’t agree with the NZR policy as such, because they may as well get their money’s worth while he’s here, but I can certainly see how they’d be viewing his ‘stay’ as a not particularly loyal one.

      Exactly. The big ‘fear’ for the NZR around their overseas policy is loss of control over their workload, and that the club and provincial game will suffer because everyone will just go overseas. An easy go-to excuse.


      The NZR themselves have done the most damage to anything below their precious Super Rugby/All Blacks by neglecting anything below those levels, then putting out statements that provincial rugby is not ‘sustainable’.


      Both club and the NPC, standards wise, is a far cry from what it once was. The NZR only have to look in the mirror to see who's to blame.

      More myopic thinking by the NZR. We don’t half like shooting ourselves in the foot and being precious when it comes to overseas players, even Kiwis playing for Aussie teams in Super Rugby. Ridiculous.


      From all the noises he’s making, it’s pretty obvious Leicester will be off again in a couple years anyway, so may as well play him while we have him.


      He’d certainly be a marked improvement on some of the “experience” only in the squad because they’ve hit the magical 50+ caps for the ABs, whereby selection seems automatic.
