Claims ex-Ireland player jinxed team with pre-match comments

Tadhg Beirne - PA

Remarks made by one ex-Ireland player turned pundit have been claimed to have jinxed Ireland in the lead-up to their Rugby World Cup quarter-final loss in Paris.

New Zealand beat Ireland 28-24 in a humdinger of contest in the French capital, as Ireland’s dreaded quarter-final curse appears to have struck again. And despite Guinness running a ‘Think it, don’t jinx it’ ad campaign with Brian O’Driscoll and Keith Wood, it appears a former teammate may have done just that [if you are of a superstitious bent that is].

One Irish outlet – Sports Joe – have suggested comments made by former Test winger Shane Horgan made on Irish television had indeed jinxed the men in green.

Horgan, an insightful analyst and pundit, told Virgin Media that if Ireland beat the All Blacks then they would go on to win the Rugby World Cup.

“There is so much riding on this game. And if you want to think that there’s even more riding on this game, I think if they win this game, they win the World Cup. That’s how big this game is,” said the former Leinster winger.

“I think this is the last piece of the jigsaw. They have hit all of the milestones. We spoke about it before, we spoke about it last week, they have won the series in New Zealand, and they beat New Zealand in Chicago, so they have got that monkey off their back,” continued Horgan.

“They have beaten all of the Southern Hemisphere teams in the Autumn, they have won a Grand Slam, they have got through the pools. This is what they need to do now – deliver in a quarter-final against a team that has a history like no other.

“And if we see Ireland do that, well the confidence that will buy, will mean that those doubts that are lingering, and maybe they only live in the back of our minds, maybe they’re gone already and we’ll find out now – but if there are any lingering, they will be gone after that.”

Sadly for Ireland, doubts over the side’s ability to make it beyond a quarter-final will continue to linger for four more years. To paraphrase another classic from the Irish band The Cranberries, they’ll just ‘have to let it linger’.

Pressure of expectation. It’s undone many a prior All Black WC campaign. Elite sports are just as much a mental battle as a skills display.

I think Ireland reverted to type in they went to Sexton too much. They should have pulled him and brought Crowley on. No player wants to be subbed but I dont think Sexton added much with 10-15 left. He only really had 65 mins in the legs.

Crowley fresh would have brought a real running threat.

There is a bit of luck in any sport but didnt go Irelands way.

As for having been there 4 yrs ago, but Ireland’s being ‘a different team now’, well, funnily enough, aren’t the AB’s too?

Is SCW’s ‘foresight’ about a ‘northern powerhouse’ 1/4’s clean sweep a tad wide of the mark? Shades of Stephen Jones? Specsavers?

Ireland was the better team … AB’s we’re fortunate with the bounce of the ball and wayne barnes!

and 2 yellow cards and a penalty try. Ireland we’re fortunate the AB team are still finding their feet, they could have added another 20 points if they had a bit more team cohesion which they will get with time.

This is complete nonsense Wayne Barnes beat Ireland as his agenda was that they would not win while he was ref and he used the scrum for his anti Irish bias particularly at the all blacks 5 meter line when the all black tight 5 pop up under ferocious pressure from Ireland's scrum he then awards them a penalty this is an unbelievable decision which he should explain I'm not interested in some peoples excuse that it's his interpretation of the scrum laws he’s not allowed to the laws of the game are the laws of the game he is not entitleed to change the laws of the game while his cynical penalty try at the end to try and take the eye off himself is nauseating, you don't get a conversion attempt so it was job done from him. His anti Irish bais came shining through for all to see. He is everything that is bad with the game I love so much.

I can't begin to say how intense my dislike is for this anti irish individual, friends have said well he's a barrister as if this gives him some sort of special form of integrity, he has none . The game is over and Ireland were excellent the fought hard against 16 men and came up short the all blacks are a brilliant team one which I have followed for 40 years and always a pleasure to watch and the best of luck to them. Nobody is taking about Barnes why Farrell a fellow English man gave him a pass on his integrity. Nauseating

The same Wayne Barnes who refereed the deciding test of last year’s series in New Zealand where Ireland were victorious?

R
Red and White Dynamight 640 days ago

Ireland played against 14 men for 20mins. Barnes said ‘Penalty only’ repeatedly before TMO sent off A.Smith despite 2 defenders in cover. Porter was penalised 3 times for the same illegal technique, wouldnt change or adapt. Ireland awarded a penalty try and a 2nd YC. Ireland still couldnt win. All tries were scored by Kiwis, including 2 that Ireland acquired off the shelf. In the final 5-10mins, Sexton played the same inside-ball, repeatedly, for the same result. But, sure, if it makes you feel better it was the ref .

R
Robin 641 days ago

John, ABs got 2 yellow cards AND a try and conversion awarded againest them. For 20min's ABs played with 14 men on the field, Ireland could only put in 1 try & conversion…. That, Dear John is nauseating. Ireland could have done better, but didn't have enough mana (strength) to capitalize on the gift Barnes gave them.

D
Donald 641 days ago

Wayne Barnes gave NZ 2 yellow cards. Subsequently, the AB’s were down to 14 for a 1/4 of the game. Were you 1/2 cut or did you drop off during the match?

A

Yoi’re pathetic, j’m sorry. We had two players sent to the bin… sour grapes much?

W
WM 641 days ago

16 men?? you forgeting two yellows he issued against the AB’s and a penalty try? You deleting them from your count or were the touch refs against Ireland as well?

Really shaming yourself mate.

This is nonsense. The pressure in QFs is always huge, because that’s the match that separates some kind of success from abject failure. It’s the same for everyone.

The Irish players are grown men, who’ve been reading nonsense about themselves in the papers for ages, and no amount of talk in the papers can turn their knees into a jelly and “jinx“ them.

Until the last second, they had a realistic chance to win the game. They didn’t look deflated, or crushed (the way Wales have, unfortunately). They were largely in control of their own destiny. Very fine margins decided the game in the end. No pundit jinx had any role in that.

D
Donald 640 days ago

So, has the AB’s’ ‘aura’ been restored? Normal service resumed? Are they now ‘over the radar’? Sorry, couldn’t resist some tongue in cheek following all the northern meedja blather.

Actually arrogance has consequences. No need to get superstitious.

That old slow ineffective flanker , Peter O’Mahoney jinxed them when he tried to shame Sam Came lat year. Obviously it motivated Cane to dominate the old boy and send a rather flaky Ireland out, once again, before the big boy round. Embarrassing. For Ireland and the old fella O’Mahoney. That might teach him to not be a cock.

B
BE 641 days ago

Still think AB’s did Ireland a favour by beating them in an excellent game. Ireland have played same team throughout this campaign, and it showed second half. They had no faith in back-up players. Hanson was walking injury amd would not have made it too finals, Lowe was off key, seemed vision was affecting him. Sexton was static and made no real impact. Their lineouts were poor, scrums were poor, Doris and VDF were out on their feet. Mahoney, not worth mentioning. Only thing that kept them in game was their fighting spirit, of which they must be proud, but they were outplayed. If they’d made it to finals they would’ve lost by record margin

D
Donald 641 days ago

Well, as there were only 4 points in it at the death, ‘outplayed’ seems a bit of an exaggeration doesn’t it? Ireland shaded territory, possession, although NZ were always ahead. However, but for Jordie Barrett & 37 repelled tackles before closing time, it could have been a different story. Pleased it wasn’t, aren’t we?

Just look at all the other rubbish irish cheerleaders, sorry pundits, butt licking and talking up the Irish as best of the world only slightly more than talking down all the opposition, not just the abs, whoever they played. So much ammunition for the opposition and the ABs were happy to use it.

Will the media ever learn. Look at how hesitant and careful the nz media and fans are. Look at the respect the south African pundits give the opposition, even if it's grudging. It's lessons learnt from the groups who have won the whole show

J
John 641 days ago

Some amount of shite talking going on here.

B
Blanco 641 days ago

Can you provide ANY substantiation to back these clear lies?

All I can see is idiots SAYING Ireland behaved as you say, non evidence of it actually happenning. SA have been talking about retaining the trophy for years. NZ had an obsession over decades about winning their second title in 2011. They mentioned winning it big time before hand in 2015. This is just petty arrogance between some NZ and SA supporters who believe no one else is allowed to believe.

New Zealanders may not understand, but in France Test rugby is the 'B movie'

So with all that's been said, France sending a b team, top 14 so strong, we support ab’s, they support top 14 and WC and six nations. It is what it is, but do you think that the results of this tour have matched the outcry? Like the first test against a so called b side? Yes we won, just. The second test was better, but against a lesser team apparently. And the third test we will experiment, to a degree. But we are still not thrashing them. One would expect if the teams they are sending are so bad, then why aren't we holding them scoreless and why aren't we putting 50-60 points on them every week? We put all our emphasis on international rugby, yet the show isn't what one would think it would be considering all the facts. I don't know, but I was really expecting the ABS to come out in the first test and show France how pissed off they were that they had sent a mediocre test team. Send them home thrashed and with their Tails between there legs, but I don't know. I think they would go home confident that even if they put the b side in, they can compete against a power house AB team. Not good for us, more so for them. As we all know, the mental side of international rugby is huge. Players confidence can set there path for their careers. So I think it was a perfect chance to absolutely dent the confidence of these up and comers, so when they faced us again in the future, they wouldnt be so keen! And if the ABs had really smashed this team and any other team that done the same, then it would be a message to all international sides. That if you do so, you do so at your own risk and at the expense of the growth of your players going forwards. I get what everyone is saying in regards to all the other stuff. Yes we have a lot to work on. But firstly we need to win, and win big. Otherwise these complaints of b sides, look rather silly. Yes we are 2 nil up. The second test against a much weeker side was better-ish. But C'mon, if they want to send b sides, we should treat them like that, and really be smashing them. Confidence in any player, can be changed for the entirety of their careers. Maybe if we did this, they would realise the effects and send stronger teams. But I don't think that so far this series, any player would feel like they wouldn't want another go at the ABs and can face up to them. Just a thought
