Connacht hammer Zebre away in Italy

Connacht bounced back from last week’s narrow defeat by Scarlets with a comfortable 47-12 Guinness PRO14 win at Zebre.

The Westerners racked up seven tries with Tom Daly and Alex Wootton grabbing two apiece in Parma.

Tommaso Boni broke through to give the Italians an early lead but two Jack Carty penalties cut the deficit before Sean O’Brien drove over.

Wootton’s double put Connacht 23-7 up at the interval before Sam Arnold and Daly stretched the advantage to 26 points.

Connacht were reduced to 14 men when Abraham Papali’i was shown a red card for a head-high challenge on Boni, and Marco Manfredi promptly scored Zebre’s second try.

But a penalty try put the visitors 40-12 up and Daly chased down Conor Fitzgerald’s kick through to complete the scoring.

Top observation. It does seem that much of Joe’s selections were still focused on the future, not necessarily on the immediate tour win. For example, there were other more experienced wing and 10 options but decided to blood those players as well. No JOC either who could have helped close out that match.

And even with a focus on the future, they pushed the BILs to nearly evening the series.

You also only need to get it right once. Wilkinson’s is iconic but he missed three before he nailed the one that counted.

But that is 7 years ago, he was quickly worked out that his option were run, run ,run and the maybe pass or kick, with his pace early days he was getting away with that, as the game changed and his pace declined, he was shown to be deficient in controlling a game.

He has a style of passing ie turning his body towards the target which allows defenders to run off him, then there is his kicking, which is mixed at best, sometimes good but too often a popgun, and then his biggest fail, when on attack in the oppo’s half or even 30 metre line he does stupid kicks into the 22 which almost invariably give away attacking ball, and lets the defense off the hook.

That is his greatest weakness, he runs out off ideas and just kicks the ball away, so fing frustrating.

Agree. A penalty is a penalty at any stage of the game.

Beale’s freak slip in the first test in 2013 handed them game 1 and the advantage. In 2017 Romain Poite hands them a drawn series as he thought accidental offside doesn’t count. 2021 they got beaten into the dirt by the Boks physicality.

A dodgy call for this series.

It’s a theme.

A lot of salt coming from NZ this days… Saying that French people don’t like international rugby 🙃

This author is not from New Zealand.

Not a bad post otherwise. Except you don’t see great players every week, your players only play 50% of games. If that’s fine with you OK, its going to be less so that they can tour next year, as the new competition starts for France. They will need to play even less domestic games, but you should be OK with that.
