Great Britain will challenge for the top prize on the HSBC SVNS Series this season after securing their place in the top eight ahead of the winner-takes-all World championship at Los Angeles’s Dignity Health Sports Park on May 3-4.

Before the prestigious Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, the Brits were in the box seat for a top-eight spot. 17 points separated eighth-place GB and Kenya in ninth, but the Kenyans were still a mathematical chance of a miraculous recovery before the SVNS Series finale.

Kenya still had an outside chance of surging up the standings by season’s end before their clash with South Africa on Sunday. It was a tense playoff with both teams out of title contention, but Kenya’s sevens fate was sealed after going down by just two points.

LA’s Dignity Health Sports Park will host the World Championship and SVNS Series playoffs on May 3-4. Don’t miss out – buy your tickets HERE.

With a dramatic 19-17 loss to the Blitzboks, Kenya joins Ireland, the United States of America and Uruguay in the bottom four. Those nations will compete against the top four sides from the HSBC Challenger Series for core status during the World Championship in LA.

Even if Kenya had won that match and Great Britain had gone on to lose their last match at Kai Tak Stadium against Ireland, they still would’ve needed GB to finish last at next weekend’s last regular season event at Singapore’s National Stadium.

Great Britain join Argentina, Spain, Fiji, South Africa, France, Australia and New Zealand in the top eight but only one will be crowned the 2025 SVNS Series overall men’s champions. France took out the top prize last season with a thrilling win over League Winners Argentina.

After a statement win over Fiji on day two, Argentina’s Santiago Alvarez briefly explained that the World Championship is the team’s “dream” this season, but at the time Alvarez and Los Pumas Sevens were firmly focused on their quest for a first-ever title in Hong Kong China.

“We’re trying not to think about LA,” Alvarez told RugbyPass.

“Of course, it’s our dream, our objective is winning LA… but we’re going step by step and trying to be better.”

Across the first four events of the season, Argentina emerged as the team to beat after podium finishes in Dubai, Perth and Vancouver. Los Pumas Sevens took out the titles in Perth and Vancouver, beating Australia and South Africa in those respective finals.

Fiji and South Africa have also tasted trophy-winning success during the 2024/25 campaign. Spain, France, Australia and South Africa have also achieved top-two finishes at events, meaning anyone could win the men’s title at the World Championship in a month.

Six women’s teams have also secured their place at the World Championship. Those sides are New Zealand, Australia, France, USA, Canada and Japan.

Great Britain, Fiji and Brazil are all in a battle for the final two places in the top eight. Two of those teams will punch their ticket into the winner-takes-all World Championship at next weekend’s final regular season stop at Singapore’s National Stadium.
