England coach set to be axed after World Cup - report
Steve Borthwick is set to part ways with defence coach Kevin Sinfield at the end of the World Cup, according to The Telegraph.
It has been reported that the rugby league legend will move on after Englandās third place play-off on Friday, with his role being filled by South Africa assistant coach Felix Jones. The Irishman has been part of the Springboks set-up for over four years now, helping them win the World Cup in 2019 as a defence consultant.
The former Munster playerās move to England was announced at the end of the Six Nations this year, and while there has been no confirmation yet as to what role he will play in Borthwickās coaching team (being announced as an assistant coach), The Telegraph believe it is in place of Sinfield, who will move on as part of a āmutual agreementā.
The report said: āThe coaching set-up will also be bolstered by the recruitment of Felix Jones, the Irishman who is currently the defence coach with the Springboks for the last five years.
āFelix Jones is a coach obsessed with detail in a similar fashion to Borthwick ā it was his defensive strategy that plotted the downfall of Farrell in the 2019 final.
āAnd his arrival in January will almost certainly see Kevin Sinfield, Englandās current defence coach who joined the set-up from Leicester with Borthwick but has lacked the experience to make a significant impact on the Test stage, move on as part of a mutual agreement.ā
Sinfield joined England alongside Borthwick at the end of last year following Eddie Jonesā dismissal. The pair had won the Gallagher Premiership with Leicester Tigers earlier that year, but endured a tough introduction to Test rugby during the Six Nations, including a record 53-10 loss to France at Twickenham. However, they have a chance to finish third in the World Cup this Friday when they face Argentina.
England seems obsessed with SA coaching staff after 2019 world cup they poached anothr member from South African i think it was Proudfood if am not wrong š
Paddy, Correct me if I am wrong, Owen Farrell cost England the game , when in the first half he was penalised , argued with the referee and the penalty kick was moved forward 10m , which the referee was entitled to do, and which placed it in a kickable position and SA successfully gained the 3 points. That 3 points made all the difference to the result.
Yep⦠and we coughed up some other pens in the first half through indiscipline.
Given how shit we are at scoring tries, to give up easy points in the first half when we had dominance was infuriating. We should have gone in 12 - 0 and the game would have been over.
That's about the only record they will break this RWC. Bring them into the conversation of finals x3 šŗ
New attack coach might be a better place to start
Definitely but it's not like the Boks attack is scintillating. It's basically the same as ours but with bigger forwards and faster wingers.
Seems like England's defence is starting to click under Sinfield⦠I can't imagine Borthers is going to dump him so quickly after bringing him from Leicester.
ok I read the telegraph article and it was just speculation. Doesnāt seem to be based on any particular insight at all. Panic over!
Sounds like the telegraph have got this wrong, why would we get rid of our defense coach and replace him with an attack coach?
he is currently attack coach, but was defence consultant in 2019
Felix Jones is not the Boks defence coach, he is the attack coach, Nienaber is the defence coach.
So if England wants to appoint Felix as defence coach because of his years of experience as defence coach then it is not fake news.
My favourite SA rugby moment of all time was when Victor Matfield got appointed attack coach at the bulls šš¤£šš¤£
what????
why????????
