England issue Tom Curry allegation update, address Sinfield's future

Richard Wigglesworth has insisted that the allegation of discriminatory language against Tom Curry in last Saturday’s Rugby World Cup semi-final hasn’t distracted them from preparations for this Friday’s bronze final match versus Argentina in Paris.

It emerged in the aftermath of England’s dramatic 16-15 loss to South Africa at Stade de France that Curry has approached referee Ben O’Keeffe midway through the opening half and asked the official. “Sir, if their hooker calls me a white c***, what do I do?” O’Keeffe replied: “Nothing, please. I’ll be on it.”

Curry opted to stay silent in the post-game mixed zone when asked about what had happened, but it emerged on Monday that World Rugby were formally reviewing the allegation in relation to the use of discriminatory language by South African hooker Bongi Mbonambi.

With the investigation still ongoing, neither World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont nor chief executive Alan Gilpin would comment on the matter when questioned at Tuesday evening’s media briefing about the expansion of the 2027 Rugby World Cup to 24 teams and the creation of a new Nations League-style tournament from 2026.

Questions were also asked at the England media briefing ahead of their third-place playoff and assistant coach Wigglesworth said: “Tom is good. He has been thrown into it, he is a very impressive young man.

“I know the players would have got around him. Steve (Borthwick) and the management team have been all over it. I’m sure he is getting every bit of support he needs.”

“We get stuck into our prep for Argentina. The process is the process. We have no knowledge of how long that is going to go on for the outcome.

“Every week there is always some sort of thing you could be distracted by. This is international rugby, there is lots of noise around it. This distraction is different but it’s still noise that isn’t about Friday night.”

England flanker Ben Earl added: “Tom is a brilliant team-mate and friend of mine. He is also an incredibly resilient guy. He gives his all for the team and I know he’ll do that this weekend and I hope it gets resolved pretty quickly.”

There has also been speculation since the semi-final loss that defence coach Kevin Sinfield will exit the England set-up following the tournament.

Wigglesworth, who was the Leicester No9 when Sinfield assisted the Tigers to their 2022 Gallagher Premiership title win before joining Steve Borthwick when he switched to the England job last December, wouldn’t confirm if the rumour was true or not.

“Nothing I have been aware of from Kev. It’s hard to comment on as it is not me who the story is about. Hopefully, there isn’t much in it,” he said, adding said: “He is a close friend of mine from Leicester.

“I’m very close with him so I am probably incredibly biased about what Kev brings. I’m sure the lads and the environment will tell you he gives absolutely everything, has a big influence on individuals.

“He gives up a lot of his time just trying to help. We know he is that sort of person and he has done an exceptional job of doing it.”

Switching to the imminent Test rugby retirement of Courtney Lawes following the conclusion of his fourth World Cup, Wigglesworth explained: “He will be remembered for his actions in an England shirt. he is incredible to play like he does, to get the amount of caps, the amount of World Cups [four] he has.

“I’m sure he will go down as an England legend and rightly so. A massive contribution over a significant number of years. He has overcome injuries and time out of the game to come back and always back to his best. A sign of a classy player.”

Does Wigglesworth have any painful memories of getting tackled by Lawes at club level? “I was always smart enough to make sure (I didn’t),” he quipped.

“I actually got Charlie Hodgson (the ex-Saracens and England player) filled in once after taking two steps too many at scrum-half. I had to apologise for getting a couple of guys hit. I avoided him at all costs.”

Oh please can Curry stop being a little crybaby. There was NO racial slur. The Afrikaans word for “side” is “kant”. Só topside will be bokant, bottom side will be onderkant. Right side = regterkant, left side=linkerkant and so forth. The Springboks speak Afrikaans. Bongi said WIT KANT which means WHITE SIDE referring to England's rugby jerseys. Please Google or get an Afrikaans - English dictionary Curry. We are all cracking ourselves up in SA about his whining. Sour grapes. We’ve got much better swear words in SA, we hardly ever use the c word lol.

Out of context. What if a white player on SA side called white boy Curry a white c***, would he be quick to complain about racism? I see we are still defined by colour not as people ie 1 person called another a

The worst part of of this so called incident in this woke world of ours is that a man on a rugby field playing against other men can run to an official like a little prep boy on the playing field runs to his teacher and says “ that boy swore at me”. Is this the level the Brits have sunk to. Poor form, to say the least.

Maybe try not being one, Tom.

That is not the case at all what is wrong is the racist comment if you cannot see that then you need help. Had it been the other way round all hell would have been let loose.

M
Mark 638 days ago

If the allegation is correct then it’s not poor form. Because had the roles been reversed Currie would be on his way home now as the rugby world crucified him. Racism has no place in the game from anyone.

S
Stephen 638 days ago

Are you for real? If Curry had been accused of a racial slur he would have been hung out to dry before any investigation. As for running to teacher, what is he supposed to do?Days have gone where things like this were sorted out on the pitch. Mores the pity!

It’s even worse if recent reports out of South Africa are to be believed. Turns out Curry used an incident that happened in December 2022, and not in the actual Semi. If true, it means it was premeditated by Curry. No misunderstanding, no excuses, but deliberate and laced with malice. Let’s see how it plays out. Why are the reviewing footage from December 2022? Why is that relevant now, and especially a few days before the game? Probably a ban from WR against Bongi 5 minutes before the game starts. Recall how WR banned Rassie 3 days before the 2021 test match against England.

The issue is not with the word cunt, it is with the word white. If you are going to replace letters with stars, shouldn't it be “w**te cunt”?

He was talking to his white jersey

Gosh

W
Willem 638 days ago

“Wyd kant” in Afrikaans means wide side. And white the color of the English Jersey is “Wit” could he have been talking about that and Curry misunderstood?

C
CF 639 days ago

if this turns out to be that Curry misheard Bongi speaking afrikaans then he should be charged with false allegations. At the very least for being so English and only ever learning one language, sometimes called monolingual (although some folks prefer "illiterate") 😅

K
Keef 638 days ago

No excuses your player has none,it happened no doubts.

A
Another 639 days ago

That assumes bad faith on the part of Curry and laws don’t work that way. The complaint has been acknowledged and investigated because it is a serious allegation. Curry himself is not under investigation.

D
DD 639 days ago

Presumably Curry mentioned this at half time. What was Borthwick’s response. If Curry and the rest of the team were so upset why not refuse to come out for the 2nd half. They would have done us all a favour saving us from another extremely boring 40 mins.

England wanted to disrupt South Africa, there was cynical play around stoppages, first resulted in penalty after Faf was literally abused, Farrell holding onto ball, continual chirping at ref, even arguing with ref to put SA in bad light. There were many instances, players held on the ground etc. My opinion England set out to antagonise SA. I don’t think Bongi said what he’s accused of, no hint of this behaviour before, no “repeat offender” tag. To suggest Bongi has suddenly turned racist is obscene, if something was said should be taken in heat of moment and what transpired before, I still do not believe there was any racist intention. This is an absolute example of how to make a mole hill, or storm in tea cup.

S
SR 638 days ago

There is footage going round purporting to show the incident it looks to me like Sa players are fanning out talking to each other about defending the ruck. Bongi’s comment is amongst those and it’s hard to hear what was said. But really is it likely that a Springbok captain, with all the SA emphasis on discipline and no previous form for this sort of behaviour would take time out from organising a defensive move with his team to stop and yell abuse at Tom Curry? If as I anticipate and hope Bongi is cleared will Curry be charged with bringing the game into disrepute I wonder?

K
Keef 638 days ago

He said what he did for sure becos it would make no sense with the other comment.

K
Kelvin 638 days ago

Exactly, England players have a ‘black belt’ in this manner of unprofessional play off the ball. Warnings must be given when antagonistic play is clearly seen - march the offending team 10 metres. Inside the 22 then 5 minutes in the bin.

So says Spike.
