England name 27-man squad for Italy

England head coach Eddie Jones has retained 27 players to prepare for England’s next Guinness Six Nations match against Italy at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday (KO 4:45pm).

Charlie Ewels (Bath Rugby) has been called up as injury cover for Maro Itoje (Saracens) while Ollie Thorley (Gloucester Rugby) is retained as injury cover for Jack Nowell (Exeter Chiefs).

The Lions will scrum for penalties, kick for touch, and maul off line-outs.

Why ‘the curse of the Bambino’ is still stronger than ever at Leinster

A lot of money, and a lot of structures etc makes for a really good team. But for that team to become truly great you really need the extra percentage on players like the Sextons etc of the world. The current Irish and Leinster players are really good but they cannot be accused of being in that rarefied top bracket. And 10 and scrumhalf is really crucial at this level. Add a few vagaries - over-confidence from winning previous games too easily, inspired opposition on the day … how end game decisions came down to Conan … but all that said just the fear of failure should have had them take the 3 pts and live to fight in extra time … but then again hindsight tells us that …

He has been brilliant since his arrival at Leinster but like the rest of the players when he came on yesterday, he was off it. He kept ploughing it up the middle head down without looking to offload or pass either side. He should have started but was poor in his decision making when he came on.

It’s a way poorer product though, it may have a better mix of nationalities but the competition is dead without SA. It is essentially a domestic competition as the Aussies and Polynesian sides are making up the numbers. Not helping that these players are not playing against different styles as well so hinders them becoming better all round players.

Five of the best performers of the week from Super Rugby Pacific

Almost certain that Razor will start Savea at 8 and Sititi at 6 to leave his two best ball carrying forwards free to carry as much as possible (one in tight and one in wider channels).


That leaves 7 open and very interesting to see if that will be Kirifi, Blackadder, or Papalii (one to start, one in squad, one in NPC as injury cover).

It’s hilarious Patchell is actually a flyhalf superstar down there. That’ll tell you the quality of super rugby at the moment. There isn’t a team there that would compete for a champions cup or a top 4 position in the Top14. The squads are small and are thin on talent outside maybe 4 sides, the rest don’t have 23 top class players.

'Rugby is kind of at a junction here': Henry Pollock on rugby values

I’ve been a football (“soccer”) fan my whole life but the first time I watched rugby, it immediately caught me exactly with its so called values. I don’t want to see it become just another sport played by arrogant douchebags. The fact that over-the-top celebrations, diving and simulating (e.g. Nic White’s moustache injury) are called out is enough proof that it will not happen in the next month or two.

Pollock talking about “more characters in the game” - well, rugby has its Kolisis, Saveas, Duponts. It also had Marler, if we’re talking about banter and shenanigans. Pollock’s type of antics is not in demand. His game is close to world class though.

The Aussies could have Joe Marler starting against them at flyhalf and they’ll still get well beaten. You fear for them when Joe Schmidt leaves as he’s getting way more out of the limited talent at his disposal there.

France homegrown players ? Have you sen the amount of Aussies, polynesian’s and SA they have in their squad. Also take a look at the NZ squad’s through the years full of Polynesians and Aussies. Ireland have three in a squad of 35, that is less than 10% lad.

You obviously never watched Sexton play and just listened to his mouth. A very good tackler and put his body on the line similar to Owen Farrell. An excellent clutch player as well, who raised his game to another level when the game was in the balance. If you want to come on and have a half arsed opinion on something try to do one based on some truth. The Aussies, New Zealand and most countries don’t have healthy competition for places…. the Aussies i mean Jesus, you might as well have picked Wales! The only two countries with healthy competition for places in every position is SA and France. This result is on both the Coaches and players. Another thing is Prendergast is 22, people need to get a grip. He’s learning his trade in the most difficult position on the pitch as playmaker. He’s making mistakes and needs to improve alot of things but he’s doing alot right also. He’ll turn into a world class operator eventually, without a doubt.

It may be the right call to look for a new head coach, but the trade-offs should be carefully considered.


Continuity is really valuable, and conversely changes at the top can cause immediate regression and even long-tail organizational trauma. New coaching brings new emphases, new game plans, new structures, new coaching assistants, new selections and a new culture. All of those may or may not be positive, but they are certain to be more or less disruptive, at least for a while.


Conversely, the really successful teams have had stable coaching over many years, with robust grooming of successors, retention of institutional knowledge, etc. The solution for Leinster may be to make some adjustments. And that should be rigorously considered before reaching for the ejector button.


Leinster delivered extraordinary victories in the two previous games. There were no calls for resignations. Had the ref allowed the disallowed Leinster try in this game there would have been no calls for resignations. To me it feels like there are millimeters between hero and zero in this case.
