It’s just about accepting how things are. Irelands two biggest problems used to be a small player pool and the fact that they didn’t play the ‘big 3’ often enough. The small player pool is now our biggest success. With apologies to C Doris, we don’t have a generational talent like O’Driscoll, Sexton etc. anymore. Guys who would have 3 RWCs if they were born in the SH.

What we do have is multiple pathways available to have a pool of around 40 well conditioned, capable test players. 25+ will always be from Leinster. It’s just the way it’s structured.

Again, the bigger the guy, the bigger the breakfast. It’s just how it is.

In 2019 Spencer played literally only 5 minutes in the RWC, only featuring in one match, which England lost.

I don’t blame anyone for taking the money and the lifestyle of playing in France, especially Jack Willis who has suffered two very serious knee injuries and then had Wasps go bankrupt beneath him, but the price to pay is being ineligible to play for England and if the BIL coaches cannot see you play international rugby, then the chances that they select you must be reduced. The difference between Test matches and the teams playing at the sharp end of the Top 14 and Champions Cup may not be that great, but nor is it nothing.
