Scrums were dominant for the Lions but didn’t impact the game as much thankfully for us. Despite losing I was really impressed with the Brumbies effort. Their systems have some merit. That was the weakest side we have fielded all year and the Lions took the 3!

I think you need a specialist 10. and there is alot of adaptability in the other backline players that they can cover an injury elsewhere. Daugunu covers centre and wing, JAS centre, wing and fullback etc. Where cover is short is 10/12

No analysis, for example, to support the claim that the AB’s tried to play Super Rugby. What does that even mean? Super Rugby starts in summer, and ends in winter. It completely changes over the course of the season.

I agree with the author’s views that Super Rugby’s quality is diminishing - affecting preparation and mentality when preparing for a huge test match. Unless the NZRU relaxes the archaic eligibility rules, the national team will continue to suffer. Young New Zealanders need that experience of playing in foreign, gruelling and competitive leagues.

Agreed. I remember talking to you last year about not being convinced on noah. And I’m fully aware he isn’t the finished article, but to my mind he has been the obvious best option when quade/JOC are out of the picture. This has always been my argument, you only have to be the best bloke available for the jersey and noah has clearly been that imo. Donaldson in my eyes is of the Beale mould and still looks more like a ballplaying 15 then an out and out 10. Lynagh and HMP have all the talent in the world, but not the experience or game management yet to kick a team to win a 12-8 type RWC semi final win. At the moment they are super rugby players, not international players. It won’t happen but I’d probably start JOC and finish with Lynagh on the bench and ideally would have lynagh on the bench for the next 2-3 years until he is fully developed. Playing 10 at the moment is more of an old mans game where brains and problem solving are more important than linebreaks and flick passes. Its the renaissance of the russells, quades, sextons, pollards and maybe even farrells of the world. And the shame of it all is that aus rugby have now mishandled noah so badly after investing so much in him, that he is leaving aus shores just as the investment might pay off and so now we have to go through all the pain again. I’d almost put money on donno or lynagh leaving aus shores in the next 2-3 years after being chewed up and spat out from the same machine.

Lions haven’t shown alot at scrum time so nongorr may survive, but apart from tupou there really is no one else. Allan will have to play big minutes it seems. Sorry, but 10 is a very specialist position in the modern game, you can’t just pigeon hole an athlete in there and think it will work. As farrell, sexton, quade and pollard have shown in recent years, if anything what you need is the brain to run the operation and almost act as an onfield coach. That’s why a JOC or Foley type could be a better option…

I think Tupou should’ve gone overseas when he left the reds. His last couple of years at the rebels and now tahs have basically been a waste and haven’t really challenged him. I think he would’ve done better recharging or getting a challenge to improve in the north these last 2 years and then come back to Aus in time for the lions or RWC. Its easy to say in hindsight, but I said this at the time also. Not many players went to the rebels and improved unfortunately.

Super Rugby is such bad preparation for international rugby and that’s why NZ could only come second at the last world cup and lose only one game on their Northern Hemisphere tour last year.

The goalposts are never not moving for the ABs. If they don’t win by 21 then it’s a disappointment. Meanwhile, France are heaped with praise even when they lose and as their best players are sitting at home resting 2 years after losing a home world cup and 2 years aways from a world cup in Aus.
