Former Argentina international Federico Aramburu has been shot dead in Paris - according to reports from France.

The 42-year-old was shot dead following an altercation between two parties in Paris city centre, off one of the French capital's best-known streets, Boulevard Saint-Germain.

According to early reports the star had been part of a group of people involved in some sort of incident, which was broken up.

However, one of the parties returned in a vehicle and opened fire, killing the former winger.

French police have launched a murder investigation.

According to an AFP report carried on RTE Sport a former teammate of Aramburu who was with him when he was shot, said: "There was an altercation, as there can be at the end of the evening. It was settled but the men came back and fired at Aramburu, who took three bullets."

He had represented Los Pumas on 22 occasions, playing on both wings and at outside centre.

Argentinian rugby's official account said: "We deeply regret the death of Federico Martín Aramburú. We accompany his family and friends in this time of so much pain."

The FFR wrote on Twitter: "We learned with sadness of the death of Federico Martín Aramburú. Today we have a huge thought for his family, friends and all of Argentinian rugby."

Glasgow Warriors stated: "We are shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden and tragic death of Warrior #185, Federico Aramburu. The embodiment of a true Warrior and much-loved by all, the thoughts of everyone past and present at the club, are with his family at this immensely difficult time.

Perpignan stated on Twitter: "Immense sadness at the announcement of the death of our former player Frederico Martin-Aramburu in tragic circumstances. USAP sends its most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones."

World Rugby said: "The rugby family mourns the loss of former Argentina winger Federico Martín Aramburú at the age of 42. Part of Los Pumas squad who finished third at RWC 2007, he won 22 caps for his country and represented the likes of Glasgow Warriors, Perpignan and Biarritz."

Scottish journalist Mark Palmer wrote: "That is absolutely horrendous news about Federico Aramburu. One of the nicest, hardest-working people I encountered during my time Glasgow Warriors. Devastating for his young family."

Aramburu had played for Biarritz, Perpignan and Dax in France and Glasgow Warriors in Scotland.
