Former Scotland scrum coach and Italy international Massimo Cuttitta dies aged 54

Former Scotland scrum coach Massimo Cuttitta has died aged 54. He had been admitted to hospital in Rome with Covid-19, the Scottish Rugby Union said in a post on its official Twitter account.

“Scottish Rugby is deeply saddened to hear the passing of our former Scotland scrum coach Massimo Cuttitta,” the statement read.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends in rugby at this time.”

The Italian rugby federation confirmed his death on Sunday evening.

      Cuttitta played 70 times for Italy between 1990 and 2000 and captained the Azzurri on 22 occasions.

      He spent time playing for Harlequins and served as Scotland’s scrum coach for six years from 2009.

      For everyone interested in real stats, not the random and self-serving samples some have come up with, here's a comparison of 2019-2023 for AB 10's against top 6 and top 3 opponents. This was the era when Hansen was in decline, then Foster was in charge, and it was a choice between Barrett, McKenzie and the man neither of them wanted, Richie Mo'unga, but had finally started to regularly pick for NZ at 10 against top 6 and top 3 opponents.

      Damien McKenzie, 2019-2023. 3 from 3 against top 6, 0 from 0 against Top 3. In those five years Hansen couldn’t pick him [he had only picked him once between 2016 and 2018 anyway] and Foster only picked him three times, and never against a Top 3. So he is irrelevant to this discussion.

      It’s actually not a policy with the IRFU. That’s an important distinction to make.

      Outside of Sexton - who was nominated for World Player of Year while he was playing club rugby in France - Geordan Murphy spent his career at the tigers while being nailed on for Ireland and consistently one of the best 15’s in the NH. Eoin Reddan became first choice later in his career and was a superb tempo 9 while also winning European cups with wasps. Even my old house mate Johnny O’Connor was winning triple crowns with Ireland while also playing at wasps.

      It’s a fair point, it’s always going to be controversial though because lists like these are subjective, it depends are your criteria. To be classed a a great player you are not going to be judged on what you have done over the last few games, it has to be measured over a number of games against a variety of opponents.       Woodmans a great player but shes not been playing 15s since the last world cup and has only played about 3 tests on her return. Rugbypass then make her the number 1 player which is a bit absurd-you would pick someone who has been outstanding past couple of years. She did nothing against canada the only decent team she has played against on her return. This isnt me saying shes not a fantastic player-just that its absurd to make her the number 1 based on so few games.

      They did maul a lot of pushovers, however, if you have watched them over the past 2 years they score plenty through their backs, in the 6N few tries were scored by the maul, in WXV1 it was their backs that tore through the BFs. Any team lining against the RRs in the RWC with a gameplan of defending the maul may have to develop a plan B

      The only stat that matters is how many finals you won. There’s a very old saying. “History is written by the Victors”. Second place is the first loser. The best team in the World currently is South Africa and the best team and Franchise in New Zealand is and has always been the Crusaders. In the future when this period of rugby is talked about it will be about the Dominance of South Africa and in NZ it will be about the Greatest Franchise ever. The Chiefs will be footnote as the team that had 4 shots but Choked.

      There is this misconception that the talent of an individual is somehow the property of a Country. Interfering with market forces is an unnatural process and one that creates a false sense of security.

      Top Athletes deserve to earn top dollar, that simple and putting structures in place to prevent that, is not the right, nor morally correct thing to do.

      I hope Rob Penny slots Mounga into the same role O’Connor had.

      A mentor coming off the bench for Rehana who will still be in Red & Black when Ritchie goes off shore again. Why waist valuable time on a Temp? Hopefully by World Cup selection comes around Rehana, Love and Jacomb have stepped up and we don’t need RM.

      They will have. The Boks still play off 9 a lot so I imagine NZ will have done their homework on all the 9/10 combos.

      It’s a very nice problem to have and all 3 are very different types of 10’s.

      The drawback for me is that only Pollard is worth the risk for lasting 80 mins so the 7:1 split can only work with him. I can’t see them going back to a 6:2 for the big games.
