France hooker Julien Marchand faces race to make knockout stages

France hooker Julien Marchand is unlikely to play any part in the remainder of France’s World Cup pool stages after picking up a hamstring injury against the All Blacks on Friday.

The Toulouse No2 began the match with heavy strapping on his left thigh, and could not even make it to half-time at the Stade de France in the World Cup opener before going off with what has been confirmed by coach Laurent Labit as a hamstring injury. Midi Olympique have now reported that the 28-year-old faces four to five weeks out ahead of further tests next week, which would likely rule him out of matches against Uruguay, Namibia and Italy.

Now that France have overcome the biggest hurdle in their group, beating the All Blacks 27-13, Labit said today that Marchand was not even in the coaching team’s plans to feature against Uruguay on Thursday. He said: (Translated on Google) “We are not going to act in haste. In any case, “Juju” (Marchand) was not scheduled for the match against Uruguay. His injury doesn’t change anything in our plans at the moment.”

Marchand joins a growing injury list for Les Bleus, as his fellow Toulouse teammates Romain Ntamack and Cyril Baille are also absent. While Ntamack is out for the entirety of the tournament, Baille, like Marchand, could make a comeback in the latter stages of the tournament, which could be a major boost for Fabien Galthie and his side.

I wouldn’t go so far as to call him complete rubbish, he’s a good fill in if there is a major injury crisis.

But Razor will give Simon Parker or TK Howden or someone a shot before he picks Ethan Blackadder again. Depending on what injury needs covering.

Kirifi is big enough in Super all the NZ teans and Moana all rocking starting packs more than 900kg sometimes well over that’s bigger than the lions pack and both Oz boys and Drua got some big boys too especially in the loose forwards so he playing against guys as big as anyone in rugby and most cases bigger even

Dude he is 103 kg and 6 ft i don’t see the issue. He has the size to compete. Sure, he won’t be a good jumper, but we have like 4 starting lineout jumpers who are all pretty solid in the air.

With a big ticker and a very high workrate. Watch the defensive he does. At least when he`s playing 7, we actually have a 7 on the ball, unlike one of the sevens Ian Foster played regularly, where we actually played with 7 forwards in the forwards !

So there will be 7 games on the “tour” so I would guess the squad to go will be close to 40? maybe tad more ? Lions must have used more than 40 by now I’m guessing possibly closer to 50 than 40 so that is going to be a heap more boys in environment training touring together and playing new combinations in a black jersey with real possibilities of getting in test team thru injuries/rest/form.

Imagine being such a casual for such a long period of time that you actually believe this. Pecking order leading up to the world cup is easily Barrett -Holland -Darry -Hannah -Tuipoluto I’m taking out vai’i as they'll likely use him in the loosies now as he's a genuine hybrid player that has an extreme work rate that only Blackadder would match at 6 (Ethan to be our bomb squad enforcer off the bench come time I believe)

Lord has done nothing with the chances given. An outside choice would also be Naitoa. Tuipolotu is a journeyman who can't last a game and can only front up once or twice during a match physically

Roigard Hotham Cortez I think are a nice trio …Cortez needs some confidence to be able to make mistakes and not making mistakes trying not to make mistakes if u know what I mean …it will be interesting to me where Leroy Carter ends up playing most the time at BOP if he is not in ABs, he was a halfback in u20s and early time with Chiefs squad but then did 3 years? In 7s …if he gets some more time in 9 who knows dude just seems to go at everything hard

Yes, agreed. With Razor I worry it’s far worse than being scared, there are real tendencies there that might be much harder to overcome than basic fear.

I’m primarily worried that it was actual naivety, inexcusable inexperience.


I’m OK with the idea Italy, having drew with France, weren’t a team to F with. Given games to retiring vets like Cane and TJ was a good fit, but I don’t know what could have been going through his mind to think players like Ardie would be giving 100. You just can’t do it on the last game of an exhausting year.


If he was scared of Italy’s ability, and losing, the only logical action would be to bring in fresh players whos mind was 100 on the job. Willing to go at 110 to prove themselves.


It’s just about box ticking MO, you can read it in the articles quotes. Are you not familiar with this modern fad? All the reasons you highlight against in you middle paragraph get used for by in Razor in his goals of 4-4-4. Is it box ticking for the sake it it? Yes if your a cynical olf fart like me, it definitely is. So in terms of raw value of what his options where I’m with you, at least.
