French reports suggest World Rugby shake-up

French newspaper Midi Olympique have reported that World Rugby plan to introduce a new ‘League of Nations’ format involving the top 12 teams in the world in place of the current November tours.

The brainchild of World Rugby vice-president Agustin Pichot will reportedly come to fruition in 2020 and will see an international competition that divides the 12 teams into four groups of three, with three pool games followed by a semi-final and final.

The new World League would reportedly be played alternately in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere each November.

Pichot proposed the idea in July at San Francisco’s Rugby Sevens World Cup. Pichot presented the idea in a meeting New Zealand Rugby CEO Steve Tew, French Rugby President Bernard Laporte and South Africa Rugby Union CEO Jurie Roux.

I also find the exclusion of the players you mention hard to figure out, why no Kerevi or LSL after three pretty good performances v the Lions?


The defence I just cannot work out. It has just made life so easy for Finn Russell and the Lions attack.


But as you rightly conclude, the series as a whole just feels flat and without the dramatic content it might had had.

This Lions tour unfortunately does little to peak much interest for the neutral rugby lover. The records book may well say 0-3 at the end of this tour but when it was basically foregone conclusion a few years ago it’s kind of like “so what?” One need not look further than how desperately pundits and podcasters have been trying to hype this tour up to get a good following.

Compared to say 2003-2008 I think Aussie scrumming has improved markedly - Bell and AAA would be welcomed by an 6N side and I have a sneaky feeling Taniela may go well in France!


I was however disappointed that BPA was not selected in the 23, best scrumming hooker in Aussie…

Thanks Fran. I have Valetini at 9-28m and Skelton at 9-12m. Not overwhelming stats but they helped Aussie be more aggressive on the carry, and sustain a higher temp. I felt they both made a difference. Gleeson 8-14m but he did have 5 tackle busts!
