From boxing to RWC… the curious career path of Samoa's Belgium Tuatagaloa

Belgium Tuatagaloa never grew up imagining that a Test career with Samoa was possible. Boxing was his thing growing up in New Zealand but injury forced a sports reassessment.

Stepping away from the ring, rugby filled the breach and after establishing himself with the NZ sevens side, he recently became a Samoan XVs international after making a massive sacrifice to ensure he could be selected for the trip to Japan – turning down a professional club contract in France to make sure his availability for the finals wasn’t threatened.

“I was boxing for eight years in Auckland in New Zealand but I had to stop because I had a head injury and went through some hard times,” he explained about his teenage passion for the gloves which came to an abrupt halt.

“I got sick. I had migraines and couldn’t sleep properly. I had a specialist from the US looking at me and he said I had to quit the sport. I got sad because obviously boxing was something that I wanted to do for a career. Boxing was a way for me to feel free and get my stress out of the way. It made me happy and kept my mind off school.”

Now 30, it was around 2007 as an 18-year-old when rugby began to fill the gap in his life. The thing was, however, he never realised his own potential and he even hung up the phone when New Zealand sevens coach Gordon Tietjens first called him.

“I didn’t know who Gordon Tietjens was. He said: ‘Hey, Belgium, I’ve heard a lot about you and I think that we should invite you to come to a camp’. But I hung up, thinking it was (New Zealand rugby sevens player) Lote Raikabula who was joking around with me.

“Then Lote called me saying, ‘Hey, answer because it is the New Zealand coach’. And I was speechless when he called again. It was probably the best call I’ve ever had.”

His boxing nous has complemented his rugby development. “I’ve got no fear. That’s the only thing that I will say for sure, that I fear no-one and I got that from boxing,” he said. “As a boxer, it’s just you against that other person and once I’m on a rugby field I fear nobody, no matter who you are.”

Tuatagaloa earned his first Test in July, taking on Tonga at Apia, and his ambition to represent Samoa in Japan meant he decided to turn down a contract with French club side Valence Romans.

”I don’t know if it was a bad or a good decision, but I made it for me and now I’ll give it 110 per cent. Some may call it a sacrifice but I would sacrifice anything for this jersey.”

Leinster cleanse palette with record URC scoreline against Zebre

My name is Solenn Bonnet, and I am a single mother navigating the challenges of raising my two-year-old child while trying to make ends meet. I came across a trading platform that promised astonishing daily profits of 18%. The allure of such a high return on investment was too tempting to resist, and I found myself drawn into cryptocurrency trading. Excited by the prospect of financial freedom, I invested a significant amount of my savings, totaling over 5.7 BTC. However, what started as a hopeful venture quickly turned into a nightmare. The platform was a scam, and I lost everything I had invested. The emotional toll of this loss was immense; I felt devastated and helpless, struggling to provide for my child and keep up with my bills. In my desperate attempt to recover my funds, I sought help from various recovery experts. Unfortunately, I encountered numerous fraudulent individuals who claimed they could help me retrieve my lost money. Each time I reached out, I was met with disappointment and further scams, which only deepened my despair. Last year was one of the most challenging periods of my life, filled with anxiety and uncertainty about my financial future. Feeling overwhelmed and at a loss, I confided in a close friend from church about my situation. She listened compassionately and shared her own experiences with financial difficulties. Understanding my plight, she introduced me to Tech Cyber Force Recovery, a group of skilled hackers known for their expertise in recovering lost funds. Skeptical yet hopeful, I decided to reach out to them as a last resort. Their services came at a higher cost, but my friend generously offered to help me with a partial payment. I was amazed by how quickly they responded and began the recovery process. Their team was professional, efficient, and incredibly supportive throughout the entire ordeal. To my relief, they successfully recovered more than I had lost to those heartless scammers. This was truly transformative, and I felt a sense of relief and gratitude that I hadn’t felt in a long time. I strongly encourage anyone who has faced similar challenges or fallen victim to scams to reach out to Tech Cyber Force Recovery. If you’ve invested in a fraudulent platform like I did, they are highly capable of helping you reclaim your hard-earned money. Don’t lose hope; there is a way to recover what you’ve lost.
