Glasgow fans celebrated like they had won cup, says Edinburgh boss Cockerill

Richard Cockerill claimed the Glasgow fans celebrated their victory over his Edinburgh side like a trophy success.

George Turner’s 78th-minute try proved decisive as Warriors edged to a 20-16 victory at Scotstoun.

Edinburgh had, unusually, come into the game in a better position than Glasgow in the Guinness PRO14 standings and on the back of six consecutive wins in all competitions.

But the capital club could not build on their strong recent derby record as the home side sealed a fourth win in 12 meetings between the teams.

Cockerill said on his club’s official website: “We were in it to the death and we weren’t quite good enough to get over the line to win the game. So, we take the point.

“We’ve come a long way from two-and-a-half years ago. From the reaction of the crowd it was like a cup final to them.”

Both head coaches vowed to improve their team’s discipline ahead of next Saturday’s return match at BT Murrayfield after five players were sent to the sin bin.

Ruaridh Jackson and Turner of Glasgow and Viliame Mata, Stuart McInally and Nic Groom of Edinburgh were all yellow-carded.

Cockerill said: “I’m going to have to watch it again to see all the detail of what went on. A lot of yellow cards, lot of penalties, and we got the wrong end of the yellow-card count, so frustrating.”

Warriors head coach Dave Rennie added: “The penalty count was way too high for us.

“We weren’t happy with the way we piggy-backed a few penalties and allowed them to gain 80 metres with ease.

“It’s something we’ll work on and improve upon for next week. We’ll be ready for them.”
