Glasgow statement: McLean contract terminated with immediate effect
Scotland winger Rufus McLean has had his contract terminated with immediate effect by Glasgow Warriors following a disciplinary hearing. It follows the 22-year-old’s guilty plea to domestic abuse charges. It was last week when the Warriors first suspended McLean, who made his Scotland debut versus Tonga in October 2021 and last played for Glasgow in the recent December 16 European game versus Perpignan.
A statement read: “Glasgow Warriors have today - January 24 - ended Rufus McLean’s contract with immediate effect. An internal disciplinary hearing, held in conjunction with Scottish Rugby, concluded McLean’s actions and subsequent criminal record through his admission of guilt to charges under the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act constituted gross misconduct and breach of contract. McLean was informed of this outcome today and has the right to appeal.
“Glasgow Warriors fully acknowledges the seriousness of domestic abuse and recognises the impact it has on the mental and physical welfare of those affected by it. The club was already working with Police Scotland to support and promote its male education campaign don’t be THAT GUY and further workshops are planned in the coming weeks.”
Glasgow managing director Al Kellock said: “Glasgow Warriors prides itself on being a family-centred club and are proud to always represent our fans and our city. Rufus admitted domestic abuse and his actions cannot be condoned which has resulted in his employment with Glasgow Warriors ending.
“We have taken this matter extremely seriously. Sadly, with any crime, there is a victim and as a club, we want to acknowledge the impact on the young woman involved. We are committed to ensuring our players continue to be positive role models and recognise the privileged positions they hold. We found the recent work with Police Scotland on male education to be hugely instructive and we are grateful for the opportunity to continue working with them in the near future.”
Scottish Rugby CEO Mark Dodson added: “I fully support the approach taken by Glasgow Warriors in ending Rufus McLean’s employment with the club. There is no place in today’s society for any form of abuse and his actions have impacted not only his club and rugby in Scotland but more importantly the life of his former partner, which is both sad and regrettable.
“We will continue to take a strong stand against any behaviour that either breaks the law or brings our game and its values into disrepute. We are fortunate to have many role models across our sport who inspire others and have earned our wider respect. This is not a position we take for granted and are committed to ensuring our standards on and off the pitch remain at the highest level.”

I am.
Go to commentsI cannot believe that you don't think the French rugby team coach and captain are not discussing putting Jalibert on the bench in favour of Duponts club teammate that doesn't even play at 10.
This is a terrible, massive insult to a 10 and I'm sure Dupont would also be very enraged if benched for a player that doesn't even play halfback.
A good captain would've insisted to the coach that it was an idea of madness and either select Jalibert or replace him with another 10 if you want him to be reserve.
Jalibert may not be the world's finest tacklers but that's often not a tens main strength that the loose forwards and second five cover. An intercept pass is never great but they happen.
When any player is playing for his club then it's club first, respect doesn't need to be shown to opposition players simply because they're internationals.
Who exactly are you claiming Jalibert hasn't respected? If it's Toulouse international players then it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this bench demotion out.
The outcome of selecting Jalibert to the bench and he then throwing his croissants out the window of the team bus immediately prior to playing the Allblacks is a disaster that will be team disharmony as any team mates of Jalibert are in a state of anger and revolt so a performance that will be sub optimal against a team that is thirsting for revenge against France.
I don't know about you but the Allblacks are very upset they've lost twice in a row to France and want to put out a statement performance so this preparation by Galthie of creating havoc looks to me like a coach that is clueless.
