Hanson, Stirzaker among four Rebels re-signings

Melbourne Rebels hooker James Hanson and captain Nic Stirzaker are among four re-signings for the Super Rugby team.

Stirzaker and Hanson signed on for the 2018 season along with Steve Cummins and Fereti Sa’aga, the Rebels announced on Monday.

The news comes despite uncertainty over the Rebels’ future, with the club facing the axe from Super Rugby.

“Our squad for 2018 and beyond continues to take shape with four highly respected and quality individuals who will contribute to the Melbourne Rebels,” Rebels CEO Baden Stephenson said.

“Nic, James, Steve and Fereti have all significantly contributed positively to the club on and off the field during a challenging season.”

Hanson’s re-signing is the most notable for the Rebels, with the former Queensland Red having played for the Wallabies 12 times.

The Rebels have won just one of 13 matches this Super Rugby season to be bottom of the Australian Conference.

In a strange way - perhaps because of the influence and strength of the professional league down under long before union opened up, the SH embraced professionalism with more alacrity than their northern cousins. Once the professional model was embraced in the north, numbers and resources came into play. Inadvertently because of the extremely weak Rand and also because of a premature quota policy a lot of SA’s top players ended up in the north and Rassie was able to leverage this to his advantage. When SA left the SH club comp the TV numbers plummeted. SA used to supply up 3m viewers annually. Those numbers (including me) are now bumping up the coffers of clubs like Leinster and Glasgow. And the SA players now slot seamlessly into the time zones so it’s not going to end any time soon in spite of all the carping from both the north who in some camps, are facing having to consolidate to be competitive (what Wales is going to do) and the south who are finally coming to terms that SA came out on top of that particular bunfight.

What????? One of the best coaches I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a few. Even if that dikdoos Louis Luyt didn’t think so but then he was a dikdutchman who didn’t know one end of a rugby ball from the other even if he did play for the OFS and was their captain.

Pretty fair, apart from Volavola. He deserved at least a 9, perhaps even a 10 with context added. He’s played 72 minutes of Premiership rugby across the entire season, and just 19 minutes in TOTAL since mid-Feb. To come on unexpectedly, in a crucial moment of a Premiership semi-final, stepping into the shoes of Pollard as Sale levelled it 16-16, to then call a backs move, execute it (he passed to Perese) for the score that you acknowledged proved to be the match winner, and then stand up in defence as well…was nothing short of phenomenal. A missed kick from out near the 5m line shouldn’t even be mentioned! Cameo of the season!

The one where he kicked SA out of Super Rugby, breached all the broadcasting and advertising contracts in the process thereby leaving SA Rugby almost bankrupt. He was very brave back then while sitting on a $30 million pile of government bailout money. Not so brave after SA Rugby called his bluff and mover North.

Whose ship has sailed before the first All Blacks squad?

Marshall was mistaken when he said that both Sotutu and Papalii had been discarded in 2024 by Razor. Papalii was selected for November tour but due to injury was replaced. That is a big difference.


I think Kirifi did the most damage to his All Black chances and Papalii did the most to enhance over the weekend.


Sotutu’s social media post last season showed tremendous lack of maturity and character and will not have been forgotten.

Former All Blacks weigh in on Rieko Ioane’s social media antics

The assertion that divisive figures like Pollock and Ioane bring more attention to rugby is often stated but never substantiated.

All it does as far as I can see is make divisive nonsense rugby coverage take up a larger slice of the same pie. To get parents to want their kids to play you need the actual attributes of respect and teamwork.
