Ireland suffer potential high profile casuality as Carbery carted off

By Ian Cameron
Joey Carbery's RWC hopes were threatened by injury last month

Ireland could have suffered the first high profile casualty of their Rugby World Cup warm-up campaign after flyhalf Joey Carbery was carted off the field against Italy.

Carbery appeared to get his leg caught under a ruck in the 50th minute and received medical treatment on the pitch.

The Munsterman - clearly disconsolate - was apparently unable or unwilling to walk off and was eventually driven off by the medical cart.

Carbery was replaced at ten by Connacht's Jack Carty, who together with Ross Byrne is Carbery's closest rival to Ireland's second flyhalf berth behind Jonny Sexton.

Joe Schmidt - who returned from New Zealand following a family bereavement - will be left with an anxious wait for news on the 23-year-old.

If significantly injured, Carbery, who was playing his 19th Test for Ireland, will have a number of players bidding to replace him.

Carbery, Byrne and Sexton are the three flyhalves included in the current Ireland camp. If Carbery were to be ruled out, Billy Burns, Tyler Bleyendaal and JJ Hanrahan could all potentially benefit with a call-up to the Rugby World Cup training squad.
