IRFU probe launched over claim player urinated on member of public - reports

The IRFU have launched two investigations into allegations of two separate unsavoury incidents - one in which it is claimed a Leinster player urinated on a member of the public in popular Dublin pub.

According to the report by Brendan Fanning in the Irish Independent, the union are working at establishing the facts in both cases.

The first incident involved a member of Leinster team who was celebrating his side's victory over Glasgow Warriors. According to the claims that spread rapidly across social media last week, the player urinated on the leg of a member of the public in a crowded night spot in Dublin's south inner city on the Sunday immediately following the game.

A second incident saw a former Leinster player knock an academy player unconscious in a row in the lead-up a 10 year anniversary celebration of Leinster's 2009 Heinken Cup victory.

The Leinster academy player was apparently hospitalised following the blow and underwent a pre-cautionary brain scan, but is expected to make a full recovery. The former international player who is alleged to have thrown the punch, attended the dinner before leaving the country to return home.

No charges were brought at the time of the incident. The player has not been on the IRFU books for several years and is no longer a professional rugby player.

A statement from the IRFU given to the Irish Independent stated that the union condemn anti-social behaviour 'at all levels':

“The IRFU condemns, and is committed to eliminating, any anti-social behaviour within the game, at all levels, and continues to work closely with our colleagues in Rugby Players Ireland on education and awareness programmes for our players."

“While we are unable to comment specifically on these allegations we can confirm that we are liaising with Leinster Rugby to ascertain the facts around the incident.”
