Irish politician's inadvertently hilarious take on failed RWC bid demands watching
An Irish politician's summation of the country's failed bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup has gone viral today.
Labour Senator Terry Leyden said at a sitting of the Senate in Dublin that it was 'crying over spilt milk at this stage regarding the Rugby World Cup.'
"Quite frankly, they made a bags of it," declared Senator Leyden, much to the derision of the assembled members of the 'Seanad' - the Irish senate.
When challenged on his remarks by Senator Neale Richmond, Senator Leyden claimed that had he been organising the bid he wouldn't have lost the Welsh or the Scottish vote.
"I mean where were they going. What kind of amateurs did they send out anymore? They wouldn't negotiate a piss-up in a brewery for god sake...It's a disgrace."
Senator Leyden hails from a rural constituency in Ireland - namely Roscommon - a county not known as a hotbed of rugby.
It's not the first time the senator has made controversial remarks about the sport, previously suggesting women should not play the game.
“I am not a doctor, but it’s very rough. It is a bit more physical than soccer or gaelic football. There are inherent risks in to physical sports. . .
“I’m just saying, be careful. I don’t want to see anyone endangering their health and wellbeing.”
He went on to say: “Funnily enough I am not a great advocate of women’s rugby, I think there are certain games more suited to women, and I do not mean to be discriminatory.”
He has since said he regretted those comments.

February 2002 to be precise, when Michael D Higgins as finance minister at the time introduced his sports persons tax relief bill to the dial. As the politicians of the day stated “It seems to be another daft K Club frolic born in Kildare amongst the well-paid professional jockeys with whom the Minister plays golf” and that the scheme represented “a savage uncaring vision of Ireland and one that should be condemned”. The irfu and Leinster would be nowhere near the position they are in today without this key component of the finances.
