Italy lose Sebastian Negri for Ireland clash

Italy will take on Ireland on Sunday in the Guinness Six Nations without one of their most experienced and influential players Sebastian Negri, who has been ruled out of the match with a rib injury.

In a medical report shared on Monday, Italy revealed that the 53-cap flanker suffered a rib contusion against England in their opening match of the Championship in Rome.

If the prospect of going to the Aviva Stadium to face an Ireland side who have just swept aside France in Marseille was already tough for the Azzurri, they will have to do it with a player who has been a staple of their pack in recent years and has become their enforcer.

The 110kg blindside made twelve carries in the 27-24 loss at the Stadio Olimpico, twice as many as the next best in the pack. With him being Italy’s second-most capped player as well, Gonzalo Quesada will have a tough time replacing him against Andy Farrell’s side.

The positive for Italy is that Negri did not suffer a rib fracture, and will the fallow week after round two, they will be hopeful he will be back to face France in Lille in round three. For the time being, he has returned to his club Benetton to rehab the injury.

Centres available - Jordan, Jones, Tuipolotu x 2, Mcdowall, Redpath, Harris, Currie.

Fly Halves available - Russell, Burke, Hastings, Jordan, Thompson. Kinghorn as well of course.


Seems unnecessary. Lancaster going to Glasgow who currently have the first 4 centres on Scotland’s books, as well as 2 (inc Jordan) of the top 3 Scottish flyhalves, is an odd move for all involved.

That last line is unfair. The players, I’ve no doubt, would go. But the [current] agreement between the FFR and LNR doesn’t allow it.


There’s talk in France - just talk right now - of changes to the rules for this July tour. But it would require buy-in from the clubs, who (because of WR regs) would then be obliged to rest their players into the next Top 14 season.


We can rage against the machine - who wouldn’t want to see a full-bore France in NZ? Heck, I do. But the set-up as it is precludes that. Let’s be honest, it’s not as if France have hidden what they do over the years.

Why French rugby would be poorer if Ronan O'Gara leaves La Rochelle

Gibbes left at the end of the 2020/21 season - when La Rochelle lost to Toulouse in the Champions Cup final. O’Gara was in charge for the title-winning campaigns in 2021/22 and 2022/23.


You can argue that O’Gara has failed to properly build on the squad he took on when Gibbes left. That is worth considering.

Their thinking was solid for sure but Leinster’s hand was forced significantly when SL accepted the head coach gig in Paris, and confronted by that circumstance it makes total sense to go and get the very best available to replace him.

Offloading continually in contact against teams that build their players to keep play alive and counter with ball in hand at every opportunity is one thing, and Glasgow and quins are two of the biggest proponents of that game, but doing it successfully against the French heavies is another challenge altogether that is yet to be fully tested. They certainly didn’t blow Clermont or LR off the pitch earlier in the CC group games. That said, Toulouse don’t look like they’re quite firing on all cylinders with the loss of their conductor in chief, so it may be a while before we see Leinster’s shiny new game plan properly stress tested.

Can’t help but admire the clear thinking and balls it requires to look at your deficiencies and then go out and bring in people to address them - and from the elite sphere too. No half-arseing about here - we need TH prop and lock and a big 12 plus the world’s best coach. Let’s go get the very best available.


And then, as you say, go all in on the changes they bring.


I’ll be cheering for their opponents in the semis and final but don’t think for a moment they have a good chance to beat this team.

Great article.I think the Crusaders fantastic wing, Chay Fihaki has proved Razor right. He has came of age in this years Super Comp. I think he will be named in the AB squad .A long with the resurgent David Havili , Ethan Blackadder and that leader and brilliant fullback,Will Jordan.

4 provinces? 1 wont notice, 2 will see a small increase and 1 will get a big increase.


Leinster have 11 of the 14 contracts for next season. Interesting the saving is going into the pathways for the other 3.

O’Gara is a good coach but overrated by British medias. Jonno Gibes was Head Coach during La Rochelle first victorious Champions Cup campaign and O’Gara benefited from that squad. Clearly with Gibbes gone he did not managed to keep the momentum more than a year, despite the undeniable quality of his players

U18’s yes, he then switched to England for U20’s. Essentially Dan turned his back on Scotland for England, now wants a way back in. Scotland look to be opening their arms for him. I don’t get it personally.

In that one single case from the last 10 Lions Tours? I’m not going to use that as basis for what could happen here.

In this situation we don’t need to play devils advocate every step of the way. Farrell will almost certainly be naming a tour captain who he views as the man to lead us to victory in every test vs Oz. It sets a standard, brings order and structure to the squad, allows that individual to be involved in management matters from the word go and also build comradery knowing who is leading you. It will be Doris or Itoje (or Conan as you suggest….).

If the plan from his family for him was to make more cash - which I believe you mean by ‘shackles’ - why did he left France last year while he drew interest from a number of clubs after the U20s ?

He can potentially get more pro game time sooner with Toulon, he already has family in the south-east, and indeed he can make more money, several potential reasons for him to change his mind.
