Jantjies responds to hotel scandal with cryptic social media post
Springboks bad boy Elton Jantjies has responded to his latest off-field scandal with a cryptic social media post on Instagram.
Jantjies and team dietician Zeenat Simjee were expelled from the Springboks' camp yesterday after a newspaper headline in South African reported that the pair had enjoyed a tryst in a hotel prior to South Africa's Rugby Championship game with the All Blacks.
The father of three and the 27-year-old dietician are alleged to have spent the night together on least one occasion after being spied by Springboks fans in a guesthouse. The pair were heard in the throes of passion during the night in question, although the affair ultimately ended in acrimony when a late-night row disturbed other guests at the establishment.
Rapport also describes how Jantjies failed to pay the hotel bill in full, leading to the establishment complaining to the Springboks management at the team hotel.
SA Rugby took the decision to send the pair home to SA to face the music. "The Springbok management are aware of reports regarding Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies and team dietician Zeenat Simjee between the training camp in Sabie and the Test match against New Zealand in Mbombela earlier this year," SA Rugby said in a statement. "No team protocols were breached, but the individuals are returning to South Africa to attend to these personal reports and to eliminate any distractions to the team’s preparations for the Test against Argentina."
Now Jantjies has broken his silence with a bizarre social media post. The flyhalf wrote: “I prefer to distance myself whenever I’m mad to calm my mind otherwise I become the most heartless person you’ll ever meet," against a picture of Robert De Niro in one of The Godfather films.
It's the second time Jantjies has found himself in trouble this year. He was arrested for criminal damage following a flight from Dubai to Johannesburg in May, although the charges were ultimately dropped.
