Japan returnee Charlie Matthews gets second shot at Harlequins
Harlequins have re-signed Charlie Matthews, the second row who left the club four years ago and spent 2021 in Japan.
The 6'7 Matthews plied his trade in Japan with Kamaishi Seawaves, having spent the previous three seasons with Gallagher Premiership rivals Wasps.
The 31-year-old has played in the Champions Cup on 27 occasions between Quins and Wasps and amassed 163 appearances in his first nine-year stint at the club between 2009 and 2018.
Matthews also won England Saxons honours after also representing his country at age-group level.
“I’ve had a great experience in Japan and feel recharged and ready to play in the top flight of English and European rugby again.
“I was proud to represent Quins on over 150 occasions and make some fantastic memories. I can’t wait to add many more.”
Head Coach Tabai Matson said: “It’s always a boost to welcome back a member of the Harlequins family. Charlie is a Club centurion and knows what it means to be part of the Harlequins Way, which is a factor that has been at the core of the Club’s impressive form over the last couple of seasons.
“Charlie brings a wealth of experience from both the English and Japanese games and will be a great asset to our locking options this year. I know our fantastic supporters will be as thrilled as we are to see Charlie back in the Quarters.”

Dear Ben Smith you are a genius! God please become the next all blacks coach that can take on the mighty BOKS. Your rugby acumen is second to none - imagine your dads sperm bounced as unfortunately as that oval ball did….we would not be blessed with your presence. Just as the all blacks were missing a man you too are missing a chromosome for 80% of your life, so your insights are not only profound but ring true from your own experiences. Just as the TMO interfered with citing an illegal pass I am sure your local authorities interfere with your illegal passes you make on women - How dare they!!! God forbid that rugby be officiated fairly. You are the right man for the job. Next all blacks coach is here ladies and gentlemen Miss Ben Smith (He/She/They/IT)
