The Japan Rugby Football Union [JRFU] have released a statement thanking the teams and players heading home following the conclusion of the Rugby World Cup Pool stages.

Japan's stunning 28-21 defeat of Scotland brought the curtain down on the pool stages yesterday, with all eyes now on a set of mouth-watering quarter-final ties.

And the JRFU have marked the end of the pool stages by thanking all the teams who have failed to reach the knock-out rounds.

After a low-key start the tournament has captured the imagination of supporters in Japan, with the excitement ramped up by the home nation's superb run of results which saw them top Pool A ahead of Ireland, Scotland, Samoa and Russia.

But before serious business of the knock-out rounds begin, the JRFU took time to thanks all of those who helped make it such a memorable tournament so far.

The statement read:

"To our fellow rugby players and friends now on their way home.

"Thank you for showing everyone here in Japan what a great sport rugby is.

"In the stadium, you showed so much passion and discipline that we will never forget.

"Outside the stadium, we will never forget your sincerity, integrity and friendliness.

"Witnessing your outstanding courage is a gift we will always cherish. And we will tell everyone about it, so your legacy continues to grow.

"Our sincere thanks. In our hearts, we know will we meet again here in Japan someday.

"With our utmost respect and gratitude, let's all raise a glass to rugby!"

Japan are back in action in the last of this weekend's four quarter-final games, taking on South Africa on Sunday.
