Leicester confirm triple injury blow, including an operation for England winger Jonny May
Jonny May has undergone surgery following England’s Guinness Six Nations win over Wales last weekend.
The Leicester Tigers winger lasted just eight minutes of the match at Twickenham and his club have now revealed he is set for an indefinite period on the sidelines.
"Scans have revealed that May suffered a fractured cheekbone,” read a report on leicestertigers.com. “The Tigers back has had surgery and is expected to be sidelined for an extended period.”
The loss of May for the foreseeable future isn’t the only injury setback Leicester have reported this week, though.
It has also emerged that Sione Kalamafoni and Johnny McPhillips face lengthy spells out. On the advice of a neurologist, Kalamafoni has been stood down for three months after reporting with concussion symptoms following the away defeat at Saracens.
Meanwhile, scans revealed that McPhillips, who was helped from the field early in his Premiership starting debut away to Saracens, suffered a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) tear in his right knee. He is expected to be unavailable for three months.
Speaking about the loss of the trio, Tigers boss Geordan Murphy said: “First and foremost, we are all very disappointed for the three lads.
“As we enter the final half of the Premiership season and approach the knockout stages of Europe, the loss of three players is a blow.
“All three are ultimate professionals and I’m confident they will commit fully to their rehab in a bid to return to action this season.”
The loss of the trio follows the suspension handed down to Freddie Steward for foul play during England's U20s defeat to Wales last weekend.
