Leicester Tigers resolve Anthony Watson situation after rumours

Leicester Tigers have announced they have agreed a new deal with England winger Anthony Watson after it appeared he would be leaving Welford Road in the summer.

The 29-year-old joined the Tigers from Bath in 2022 on a one-year deal which expired at the end of the season and was not renewed. That led to Watson signing a groundbreaking deal with the RFU in July in the interim. But a new deal has now been struck between Watson and the Tigers, with the British & Irish Lion rejoining from December.

The 55-cap England international was part of Steve Borthwick’s squad for the World Cup, but a calf injury ruled him out of the tournament in August. Since then, there had been a question mark over his future, with rumours circulating about a possible move overseas, which would subsequently rule him out of contention for the national team. This new deal means he will be available again to play for England come the Six Nations.

After signing the new deal, Watson said: “Really happy to get the deal over the line and restart my journey with Tigers.

“I really enjoyed being part of the Tigers last year, the squad, staff and fans were class.

“Ultimately, I came to join a great squad and win things and my goal hasn’t changed. I want to contribute to the success of the squad and organisation as much as possible. I’m excited for the year to come with this squad and with the new coaching staff.”

Tigers Head Coach Dan McKellar added: “To secure a player of Anthony’s quality and experience on a new deal is fantastic news and I am certain our supporters are as pleased as we are with the announcement.

“He has played the game at the highest levels for a number of years and, after only one season at Leicester Tigers, has shown what a great asset he is, and his skill set certainly suits our game and where we want to take it.
