'I'm not sure about the intention' - Rennie addresses Leo Cullen's controversial remarks

Glasgow head coach Dave Rennie is keen for the city to unite behind his Guinness PRO14 finalists after Leinster coach Leo Cullen called for Celtic fans to back the visiting side at Parkhead.

Warriors booked their place to play the Irish side at Celtic Park after beating Ulster 50-20 on Friday in front of a capacity crowd at Scotstoun.

Rennie hopes to get additional support for Saturday night’s encounter but Cullen attempted to entice some new followers for his team.

Cullen, with more than a hint of a mischievous smile, said after his side’s 24-9 semi-final win over Munster: “Glasgow rugby players all support Rangers, I’ve been told, so the Celtic fans should be supporting us.”

Rennie said: “I imagine we have guys who support all sorts of football teams here.

“We have a lot of football fans who support us and come here for the enjoyment and entertainment.

“We are just keen to get as many people who support Glasgow there on Saturday.

"I’m not sure about the intention. He’s a good man, Leo. Maybe he’s just stirring the pot but it’s certainly not something we are talking about. I’d sooner we do our talking on the field.”

Warriors have used the prospect of a Celtic Park final to drive them on all season, finishing top of their conference, like Leinster.

Rennie said: “It means you get to play in front of your friends and family, and the huge amount of support we get across the city. The whole squad will be there too.

“I think they have already sold over 35,000 tickets so hopefully we can get plenty more and plenty of Glasgow support.

“I have poked my nose in once to have a bit of a look but it was empty. I know what this place (Scotstoun) is like with 10,000 so I can only imagine it is going to be a hell of a cauldron.

“A heap of our boys have watched football games there so we are well aware of the environment. It’s exciting. We are where we want to be.”

Warriors also get the bonus of training at Scotstoun through the week and Rennie is keen to keep their preparations normal.

“We are not going to overthink things,” he said. “We’ve got a plan that’s worked and you can get sucked into all the hype and do a lot of additional stuff that creates clutter.

“So we are going to make sure we have a lot of fun because that’s what we have been doing all year. We have got to make sure we express ourselves because that’s the type of footy we play.

“There are examples of teams that become conservative because of the prize at the end of it, but we are clear in what we need to do.”
