Liam Williams savages fan on Twitter after being accused of 'arrogance'
Wales and Saracens fullback Liam Williams isn’t going to lie down and let anyone accuse him of arrogance, as he has put a fan in their place.
After being ruled out of the Rugby World Cup last week with an ankle injury, the 28-year-old took to Twitter before Wales’ semi-final contest with South Africa to say that he is “Gutted to have picked up an injury at this stage in the tournament.”
He nonetheless wished “all the best for the next two games” to his teammates.
One fan, however, brought up the eternal battle between English and Welsh fans by saying that any Englishman would have been accused of arrogance had he mentioned the next two games.
He wrote: "If that had been an Englishman saying all the best for next 2 games, he would have been accused of arrogance. Just saying #doublestandards."
Wales were knocked out by the Springboks 19-16 on Sunday, but Williams responded to the Tweet, highlighting that there is a “3rd/4th playoff game you clown”.
Wales face the All Blacks this Friday in the bronze medal final, something that is sometimes forgotten. But this may be the last time someone thinks about calling Williams out on Twitter.
The mood has been sanguine in Welsh camp this week, but kicking coach Neil Jenkins singled out Warren Gatland for praise when asked to sum up the New Zealander in three words.
"I'll just give you one – incredible. He's unbelievable, I'm not going to lie. He's a different level as far as I'm concerned. He's taken the boys to new levels, there's no doubting that. We think we can beat anyone on any given day, anywhere in the world.
"Being Welsh, that's not something that is easily achieved because we're not really like that back at home. We tend to prefer to go under the radar a little bit and we’re a bit shy in that sense.
"He's certainly taken that out of the boys and there's a belief that no matter where you are, no matter who you're playing against, you have the ability to win. For me, he's an incredible rugby man and an incredible rugby person."
England will entrust twin playmakers George Ford and Owen Farrell with the task of masterminding victory over South Africa after naming an unchanged side for the World Cup final.
