Maddison Levi: 'Starting well is something we've been working on'
Maddison Levi expressed no little relief following Australia's strong start in the women's rugby sevens competition at the Paris Olympics.
The team secured victories against South Africa and Great Britain at Stade de France, ensuring a place in the Quarter-Finals with one pool match remaining. Levi played a pivotal role, scoring seven tries across the two matches.
In the opening game against South Africa, Levi scored a hat-trick in the first half, contributing to a 34-5 victory. The team displayed a cohesive performance, with Tia Hinds and Faith Nathan also making significant contributions. Teagan Levi and Maddison Levi continued their strong play, with Teagan scoring after the break and Maddison adding a fourth try.
The match, however, saw Olympic debutant Kaitlin Shave sustain a knee injury, leading to the inclusion of reserve Kahli Henwood for the subsequent game against Great Britain. Despite an early setback with a yellow card to Teagan Levi and trailing 5-0, Australia responded with 36 unanswered points.
Captain Charlotte Caslick led the team's resurgence, with Maddison Levi scoring another three tries and Bienne Terita adding two more. Teagan Levi capped the day with a try, securing a comprehensive win and a spot in the Quarter-Finals.
"To be able to start like that and build as the tournament goes on is an awesome feeling," said Maddison Levi. "Starting well is something we've been working on all year. We've got a lot of things we can still work on which is good.
"To be out there with my sister is super special."
The Aussies are next in action against Ireland this afternoon.
