Munster great Simon Zebo announces retirement

Munster's record try scorer Simon Zebo has announced that he will retire from rugby at the end of the season at the age of 34.

The 35-cap former Ireland international has made 173 appearances for the province across two spells, with three years with Racing 92 sandwiched in between. In that time, he has amassed 72 tries for the men in red.

The 2013 British & Irish Lions tourist made his Munster debut in 2010, winning the Magners League a year later, before leaving Thomond Park in 2018 for Paris.

The winger added more silverware to his haul last season with Munster's United Rugby Championship triumph, and with his side sitting at the top of the league table with one round remaining, he could add another trophy before he hangs up his boots.

Zebo did not feature in Munster's 29-26 victory over Edinburgh at the weekend, which lifted them to the top of the URC table, but started at fullback the week before against Connacht.

Munster have one more round remaining of the regular season, against Ulster on Saturday at Thomond Park.

"After much thought, I’ve decided that this season will be my last playing the game I love," Zebo said in a statement.

"It has been a dream come true, making memories and friends for life and travelling the world with amazing people.

"A huge thank you to my family, friends, teammates, coaches and supporters – without ye none of this would have been possible. I am truly grateful for all the love and support over the years.

"I’ve loved every second, it’s been some craic and I can’t wait to see what’s next."
