Newcastle Falcons point out that they're 18-pts clear at the top of Championship as RFU suspend season
Newcastle Falcons have pointed out that they're 18-pts clear at the top of Championship as the RFU suspended all rugby in England.
The Gallagher Premiership has been suspended for 5 weeks, and Newcastle Falcons possibly fear the normal promotion and relegation process may be effected by the coronavirus disruption of the season.
The club statement reads:
Newcastle Falcons have taken note of the RFU’s decision to suspend all rugby until April 14, subject to continued review.
The Falcons are currently 18 points clear at the top of the Greene King IPA Championship table having won all 15 of their league games this season, the most recent of those being last Friday’s 41-0 victory over Bedford Blues.
Director of rugby Dean Richards said: “This is uncharted territory for all of us, but the RFU are following the government guidelines and will re-assess the situation once the period of the suspension is over.
“Clearly the priority has to be ensuring everyone’s safety, and we will continue to do everything in our power towards that aim.
"This is such a fast-moving situation that nobody can say with any certainty what the outcome will be, but we will make sure that our supporters and stakeholders are updated on a regular basis."
For reference, the RFU's statement is as follows:
Following government advice today, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) will suspend all rugby activity in England, at both professional and community level, including club training, league and cup matches plus rugby education courses from March 17 until April 14 subject to continued review.
The decision has been taken following government advice in the interests of players, coaches, referees, volunteers, supporters and the wider rugby union community.
Where possible, players at all levels are encouraged to maintain their own personal fitness and keep active during this time, while following government guidelines about safe distance and safe exercise environments.
The RFU will continue to review and monitor government advice and will provide detailed updates on the impact to the season in the coming weeks.

Steve Borthwick appointment was misguided based on two flawed premises.
1. An overblown sense of the quality of the premiership rugby. The gap between the Premiership and Test rugby is enormous
2. England needed an English coach who understood English Rugby and it's traditional strengths.
SB won the premiership and was an England forward and did a great job with the Japanese forwards but neither of those qualify you as a tier 1 test manager.
Maybe Felix Jones and Aled Walter's departures are down to the fact that SB is a details man, which work at club level but at test level you need the manager to manage and let the coaches get on and do what they are employed for.
SB criticism of players is straight out of Eddie Jones playbook but his loyalty to keeping out of form players borne out of his perceived sense of betrayal as a player.
In all it doesn't stack up as the qualities needed to be a modern Test coach /Manager
