Newly crowned player of the season Henry Slade also makes the team alongside his Exeter Chiefs teammates Rusi Tuima and breakthrough player of the season Immanuel Feyi-Waboso.

Bath and Harlequins have two representatives apiece in the team, with each club putting forward a prop. Quins loosehead Fin Baxter is joined by Bath tighthead Thomas du Toit in the XV. In the backline, Bath scrum-half Ben Spencer features, as does Quins fullback Tyrone Green.

The final member of the team is Bristol Bears centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg, who was imperious in his side’s late surge up the league table in the second half of the season.

The three sides to not have a representative are Gloucester, the winless Newcastle Falcons and Sale Sharks, despite the latter finishing third in the league.

could be a big summer ahead for Rus Tuima. He’s not been spoken about a huge amount in terms of the England conversation, but behind Chessum, Itoje, and Martin, we really need some more squad and bench options - and with Chessum likely unavailable, international minutes could come sooner than expected!

Alex Coles also obviously could get some big chances to impress, for similar reasons.

Four South Africans - cool. Hope Rassie is taking notes.

well, Wiese is already in the team and is likely to be a regular starter for many years to come. du Toit is also in and around the squad, but generally hasn’t played well at international level.

Will be interesting if he gives Green or van Rensberg international minutes. ATM I think they’re both a level below the incumbents.

Why the Gallagher Premiership is setting the gold standard in club rugby

Yes I mentioned this in one of your other articles recently I think, they have bought the IP in well and made the adjustments at grounds to change the game. They question is, has it been for the better? Or are old fans turning off?

Certainly there has been a lot published, like every other league, about growth after COVID, the question really, which they hide the answer to, is where they have been at before. I think it will work for them, and these currently vocal owners are just over negative, or lacking judgement.

Aspects like promotion and relegation are interesting, though it doesn’t sound like they have got it quite right, it might give the incentive for the Champ sides to change they perspective on going pro. As I’ve said about rugby in the SH, their has to be a plan and a foundation to allow it to work. Is the Super Rugby model what’s needed to combat France? How will the Premiership reduce and focus all the talent into those half a dozen elite teams? How if and when rugby booms again can they move back to two tier model of clubs rather than franchises?

I really like the idea England produce Franchises or mega clubs, some sort of representative and meaningful county system (or whatever they call it there) to take on those in the rest of Britain. It’s just gotta be done right and time right, to coincide with Europe and Africa. SK or Wayneo brought up some great information about how the area is a target for growth.
