Owen Farrell set for Top 14 bow with Racing 92 in English-heavy XV

Former England captain Owen Farrell is set to make his Top 14 debut for Racing 92 on Saturday when they visit Castres at the Stade Pierre Fabre.

The 112-cap England international’s move to Paris from Saracens over the summer was arguably the biggest in world rugby, as it put his international career on hold for the time being.

Farrell has been selected by his former England head coach Stuart Lancaster to start at flyhalf in a backline that has an English hue to it.

Racing’s midfield also includes former Sale Sharks star Sam James at inside centre, while Farrell’s former England teammate Henry Arundell is set to start on the wing.

The English influence on the Parisian giants does not end there though, with England U20 international Junior Kpoku lining up in the back row and former England U20 international Dan Lancaster on the bench.

Farrell is in charge of a stellar backline, which also includes French midfield stalwart Gael Fickou at outside centre and Fijian powerhouse Josua Tuisova on the wing.

The side will be captained by Wales lock Will Rowlands, although it is not a squad lacking in leadership with Farrell present as well as South Africa skipper Siya Kolisi, who is still on the books for now.

Hey Nick, thanks for another well put together article and interesting read. I would love to see Les Kiss stay at the Reds as it does feel like they are building towards something special with a great culture and team cohesion, but not quite this season unfortunately. Would be great if that reasoning was proved wrong and they take out title. It does feel to me, that Larkham and McKellar probably know more than us about the future Wallabies Coach and having now distanced themselves from the discussions, leaves Les as the frontrunner for the gig. RA do need to make a decision soon though before more of Noah’s mates join him overseas. On a more sobering note, RA’s problems seem minor to issue now being faced at home by the WRU. Would love to read your opinion on that one at some stage.

Interesting times Nick, I agree that the Reds really need to be winning more games against tougher competition for the hype around the red-surgence to be taken seriously. Stubbornly not taking the penalties against the chiefs last weekend, a hint of arrogance perhaps? It reminded me of their game plan vs the Saders a couple of weeks earlier - which after 25mins clearly wasn’t working.

Your point about HMP is a good one, and I feel that all Aussie backup 10s have been playing better than the starting 10s this season. Wish we saw more of Edmed for the Tahs.

It would have been pretty reasonable for NZ to figure they were likely to play Ireland at some point, it’s not as if Scotland had any kind of recent record against them. Just a question of which stage really. That said, there’s a strong psychological gain from besting them on their own turf.

I have Penney, and it’s quite clear to me that 6 is his most natural position and would give him an opportunity to be in the open a bit more, where he’s best, and maybe get his confidence up first.

If he makes a mistake because it’s an unaccustomed position though, he’d also have to be in the right mindset to deal with all the naysayers.
