Ryan gives us the inside story on how he went from training with Glasgow Warriors to earning a last-minute Test squad call-up and earning his 50th cap in Scotland’s historic win in Paris. 

Ex-scrum-half Mike also relives some of the highlights from his 99 caps, including the 2009 Lions tour to South Africa, a few Welsh Grand Slams and some of the memorable celebrations from a career in which he made 94 Wales appearances and played another five Test games with the Lions.

Super Rugby Pacific's greatest season stained by one playoff game

If you are a Bok supporter (you might not be) you should be grateful that SA is in the URC and Champions Cup. Playing teams from Ireland, England, Scotland and France much better preparation for Test rugby than playing teams from Australia, Fiji, Samoa etc…


I appreciate that you prefer a Super Rugby style of play but maybe give URC another chance. There are some amazing games and rivalries out there.

I think Joe is a conservative selector at heart Miz.


I reckon he’ll stick with Fraser at 7, his attitude to Harry at 8 may depend on whether he sees big Will starting at 4. If he does, Harry will be the guy left out to make room for a bigger lineout 6.

Yes the Brums had the fewest changes and the most cohesion. Having said that you would be right to expect a lot lot more from the Tahs and the Reds in particular with the added depth.

Channel one is a great option - a bit like a lightning quick ruck ball - because it gives the D less time to react Miz. In that instance it enables Feuilai to get one on one with Brett Cameron, and he will win you that battle.

The % of scrum pens will prob rise during the knockout stages as teams embrace less risk, but at least things are moving in the right direction at last.


I’m surprsed nobody picked up Nicky Smith before Leicester did quite frankly. No way did he deserve to second choice at Ospreys when he was obv good enough to be top dog at another good club…


First full season of senior rugby for Opoku, but he will get better and better.

JW, the NZRU got more than just Covid money, they also got advances on future earnings from WR as follows:


- 2020 NZR received $9.8million from World Rugby and a further >$12 million from their government.


- 2021 NZR received $14.8 million from World Rugby and a further >$15 million from their government.


No, I’m not saying they were trying to extort 30mil out of anybody, it was more a case of trying to force SA to keep the 4 big franchises in Super Rugby and not replace them with the 4 smaller ones.


What they did was release the 'Aratipu' review report to their media as soon as they received confirmation from the NZ Government that they would be receiving +/- 25% of total government bailouts in NZ during the pandemic.

It may do. Refs tend to be a lot more conservative in Test matches than elsewhere - not the place to experiment!

Why the Gallagher Premiership is setting the gold standard in club rugby

I don’t think football or basketball are dying… They understand the money is in the club game and that the international game is an nice add on. The best teams in football and basketball are club teams, not national teams.

I still read the rugby section of the site out of habit because it’s the only sports site in the country gives a rats about rugby but quality content is few and far between there at the moment. Christy is good for some scoops but that’s about it. Geoff, Harry, JD and Ben Pobjie (who writes satirical articles) are worth reading but the quality is down from where it was this time a few years ago.

France officially turned pro in 1996, a year after everyone else. They were very much against professional rugby before. France had a thriving rugby league scene before the war, but that faded out after.

BTW I asked google “what did Mark Robinson do to South African Rugby on 6th July 2020” and I didn’t get any AI answer. I saw some SAn results a couple of weeks after that reporting on SR Trans Tasman, but that tournament had nothing to do with South Africa either, so I’m still lost.
