With Sale Sharks’ season now over, they took to Twitter recently to congratulate winger Denny Solomona on finishing the regular season as the Premiership’s top try scorer.

Alongside a video, Sale posted the message “Eddie Jones you watching”, clearly highlighting the winger’s exclusion from the England team this season. Solomona finished the season with 12 Premiership tries, as Sale finished seventh.

The 25-year-old earned the last of his five caps in England’s summer tour of South Africa in 2018, but Sale believe that being the league’s top try scorer means Jones should take notice of the rugby league convert.

However, this is a tough time for a winger to break into the England squad, with the likes of England Player of the Year Jonny May, Jack Nowell, Joe Cokanasiga, Elliot Daly, Chris Ashton and the returning Anthony Watson, having all played on either flank in the past few years. With Gloucester’s Ollie Thorley and Bath’s Ruaridh McConnochie having standout seasons for their clubs as well, it only makes the Sale man’s job that much harder to find a place in the World Cup squad.

However, all he can do is score tries for his club, which is what he has done. Although this may be because the England players have not played as many games as him, that does not take anything away from his achievement. He is a natural finisher, who has been prolific in both league and union, and is guaranteed to score tries for whomever he plays for.

Meanwhile, Northampton Saints were quick to rain on Sale’s parade, by pointing out that Solomona was only joint-top try scorer with their scrum-half Cobus Reinach.

Nonetheless, this is still a great achievement by Solomona, particularly as his team has not been on the the league’s high-flyers, and he must surely be on Jones’ radar.
