Samoa limp into World Cup with narrow win over Germany

Samoa have qualified for the Rugby World Cup after leaving it late to beat Germany 28 – 42 in the second leg of their World Cup qualifier in Fritz-Grunebaum-Sportpark in Heidelberg this afternoon.

Germany lead for the much of the match before three late tries from Samoa put a gloss on what was a hard-fought win for the Pacific Island nation.

Samoa took a 51-point advantage into the game after an impressive 66-15 winners in Apia a fortnight ago and will join Ireland, Japan, Scotland and Russia in Pool A.

While Germany’s chances looked slim, they were the better team for much of the match, despite being ranked 12 places below Samoa in the World Rankings.

Germany now head to November’s Repechage tournament in Marseille – against Canada, Hong Kong and the Africa Gold Cup 2018 runner-up – for a place in Pool B next September.

While Samoa have qualified, the nature of the win is unlikely to leave a side that are struggling for form with much confidence ahead of next year’s tournament.

Congratulating Samoa on his twitter account, World Rugby Chairman Bill Beaumont said: “Congratulations to Samoa on Rugby World Cup 2019 qualification and a place in Pool A. Germany will be encouraged by a strong performance as they look ahead to November’s Repechage.”

If they pick Kiss, they need at least one other top coach to do attack and defence, esp with the Lord and prob Cronno going. At present they only have Toolan and Parling at the end of November.


By all accounts Les does not do tracksuit work, and he will not replace what Joe does now. So that coach alongside him is the key piece of the jigsaw.


Creighton is a good communicator and organizer and prob better in that aspect than the Qld guys. The sort of 10 Joe is known to like. You do not have to have X-factor in every position, esp if they do not have the ability to manage the team tactically and deliver the pictures the coach wants to see.

Maybe, but Australia cannot afford not to have a coach like Kiss IMO. I think that they are more likely to work out a functioning arrangement with Queensland than any time in the recent and not so recent past.


Whilst I think Lynagh and Harry McLaughlin-Phillips have it in them for a winning Schmidt team and a future Kiss team, I’m not so sure about Creighton.


I think the reasons why Kiss let him go and Mackellar wanted him are the same. He, like Lolesio is good at passing the ball and kicking, but doesn't create things. As he showed last night, Creighton is also good at backing up (and a great flick on pass), but leaves the creativity to others.


When they do click, the Waratahs rely on counter-attack from Jorgensen, Kelleway and Sua’ali’i…plus other bits of brilliance from Jorgensen and Sua’ali’i. Same style as the Brumbies I’d argue, and same style as Rennies team after Cooper.


They (the Wallabies) really need someone to set up others, or they be too predictable v the Lions,…and going forward after that.
