Scotland draft Ross Ford injury replacement

Scotland hooker Ross Ford

Uncapped hooker Neil Cochrane has replaced the injured Ross Ford in Scotland’s squad for their three internationals this month, while Rory Sutherland and Magnus Bradbury have also been called up.

Ford will miss the Tests against Samoa, New Zealand and Australia due to a pectoral injury, so his Edinburgh team-mate Cochrane has been drafted in by Gregor Townsend.

Prop Sutherland will also report for international duty along with back-row Bradbury, who won his second cap in a victory over Italy in June.

The absence of Ford is another blow for Townsend, who is already without the likes of Greig Laidlaw, Richie Gray, Sean Maitland, Mark Bennett and Duncan Taylor.

Scotland face Samoa in their first November international at Murrayfield on Saturday.

As the game is likely to be played in cold wet conditions it is unlikely that either midfield will see much action. In any event I don’t see much advantage for either side as Havili & Ennor are both former ABs as are Lam & Ioane. The latter pairing have largely been unemployed or effective for the Blues this season. Don’t see much ball do they ??

I think the reference to the proposed R360 competition is a relevant one.

Rrugby, wether club, province, country etc needs to relate to a place, a cultural sense of identity, a sense of belonging, that’s what rugby fans love about the game, simply throwing together an ad hoc collection of teams and trooping them around myriad sporting venues across the globe is meaningless.

Its a non starter.

No doubt that this will be a close match with the potential to go either way. I suspect though that the Crusaders have more going for them than the Blues and they won't make the errors that were prevalent in the Chiefs/ Blues clash.

I believe that it will be between the Chiefs & Crusaders in the final and an even favoritism for that match up. Don’t despair for the Canes & Highlanders next season as both have shown they can be competitive.

While Tamaiti is a loss his AB replacement is not exactly a poor player. The Crusaders front 5 were in great form last week and are primed to repeat against the Blues. BB in isolation can’t win this game for the Blues as he will be a prime target

What drug is this man on???. Firstly the Crusaders have beaten the Blues the last 3 times they have met. Secondly the Crusaders across the board actually involve all their players whereas the Blues have a narrow focus which a competent defence can thwart with comparative ease. Thirdly the Crusaders inside backs have the edge in combination backed up by a fine set of loosies. While BB is the best 1st 5 in the country the same can’t be said of his half back or outsides who rarely make an impact. Shut him down and what happens??

In the 1st half it was the Chiefs that had all the ball and territory and failed to convert into points. Credit to the Blues for surviving that and reversing the situation in the 2nd spell. Won’t be able to do that against the Crusaders who thrive in finals footie.

Three years ago I bought a second fill French oak barrel for R15 000. I scouted round all the co-ops in the western cape till I fond a Shiras that I really liked newly harvested in a stainless steel var. Filled up my barrel for the cost of R25k - laid it down on a friend of mine’s wine farm in Tulbagh. Tasted every three weeks for eight months and called in the mobile bottling unit at a shared cost of R10k and I put 460 bottles of Shiraz into my storeroom and let it lie for two years. I’m one third of the way in thanks to my endless supply of visitors who all want a bottle. But it is a very good traditional spicy Shiraz at the cost of around 4USD. It going down very well this chilly Cape Winter.

Again a fair summary last para.


Thr growing bias in SR, with NZ winning every year ultimately did them no favours. Rassie saw that SA would not have to be dumbed down if it moved away from SR, and he was right. SA rugby has stopped apologizing for itself and trying to copy NZ and Aussie and it’s identity has returned.


With Aussie also in decline for the last decade it has left NZ without regular contact with developments in the rest of the rugby world.
