Scotland international Matt Currie to stay at Edinburgh
Scotland international Matt Currie has signed a new two-year deal with Edinburgh Rugby ahead of their EPCR Challenge Cup match against Bayonne.
The 23-year-old centre debuted for Scotland against Canada this summer and has started six of eight games this season.
A product of Dumfries Saints and Merchiston Castle School, Currie made his Edinburgh debut in February 2021 and is approaching 50 appearances for the club.
Currie made his Edinburgh Rugby debut in February 2021, scoring his first professional try shortly after in a Rainbow Cup win over Zebre Parma.
He signed his first professional contract in January 2022 and captained the side against Ospreys at just 20 years old. In the 2023/24 season, he earned the club’s Breakout Player of the Season award, scoring five tries while showcasing versatility across the backline.
“I’m really excited about staying on for the next two years. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here since leaving school and joining the club in 2019. I feel like I’ve made Edinburgh my home.
“I think we’ve got a quality squad here and we’ve got a great blend of experience and younger guys coming through. I’ve grown up with a lot of the players here and it’s a privilege to represent the club alongside them.”
On the international stage, Currie debuted for Scotland against Canada and scored his first international try against Chile last summer.
“Edinburgh is a great place for me to be in terms of honing my skills and trying to improve as a player. We have some class centres here and there's some brilliant centres in Scotland right now.
“It’s a very competitive place but I think, if I can keep working on my own game in Edinburgh, I can hopefully push for more international caps in the future.”
Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach, Sean Everitt, said: “We're thrilled to have Matt [Currie] sign a new deal. He's a talented and hard-working player who has consistently impressed when playing a number of different positions across the backline.
“His development has been fantastic to watch and we believe he has the potential to become one of the best centres in the country.
“We’re delighted that he’s committed his future to the club.”

Wouldn't be so bad if they at least looked like they were giving other guys a chance and creating competition for those places instead of injuries dictating everything.
And then the midfield safety net was ALB? The guy who looks more journeyman by the year, and spent most of this season sitting in the naughty chair after doing something silly (again). So much for 'experience'.
Go to commentsI think that's a pretty selective list Nickers. What about Ratima, Sititi and Tosi who all became first choice 23? He didn't need to pick Sititi over Sotutu, Ratima over Christie or Tosi over Newell but he thought they were ready. How many debutants became first choice 23 for the other big teams South Africa, Ireland or France? Why the need to hold Razor to harsher standards than other coaches who have been around for 4+ years?
