Sexton returns for Leinster showdown with Exeter

Leinster flyhalf Johnny Sexton.

Johnny Sexton will captain Leinster as they face Exeter in the quarter-final of the Heineken Champions Cup tomorrow at Sandy Park. Sexton’s return is the only change from the 23 selected for the cancelled last-16 tie against Toulon last weekend.

The backs stay the same with Hugo Keenan, Jordan Larmour and James Lowe selected by Cullen, with Robbie Henshaw and Rory O’Loughlin in the centre.

Sexton leads the side from number 10 with Luke McGrath at scrum half.

In the front row Cian Healy, Rónan Kelleher and Tadhg Furlong are again selected to start but there is one change in the second row with Scott Fardy partnering Devin Toner for the trip to Sandy Park.

Finally, in the back row it’s once again a trio of Rhys Ruddock, Josh van der Flier and Jack Conan.

Adam Silver head honcho of the NBA referenced this with regards to the WNBA and it’s biggest audience being middle aged and older dudes who prefer the traditional style of Ball the women play snd that he hopes women embrace the sport more …plenty of rubbish here in NZ and our crowds are never that big for a lot of rugby played but Black ferns and Super Aupiki do get a good amount of support from women and men I’m sure Bok girls will start to get a good fan base the more games they get these couple games with best of the rest Black ferns team should be great for them , strong SA women’s rugby is exactly what the women’s game needs just don’t get to good please 😂

Fair point, although I'd argue that not many women are casual sports fans like men usually are as they are not socialized around it growing up. Rugby in particular is a very masculinized sport (as opposed to, say, soccer), and as this article shows women are often discouraged to partake in it as players or fans. I have a daughter and I'd like her to choose whatever sports suits her interests and abilities, and that if she chooses something like ballet it's out of genuine interest and not because of feeling left out of other sports.

Oh, I’m sure you now watched Nigel Owen’s assessment of the kick off play. As I’ve been trained as a ref and refereed for years, it was easy for me to get back to how I was trained to reach that assessment. How long have you refereed?

Regarding the “line-out” play, as there’s no chance of contact on the jumper and there is open play, I would just go around the jumping pod and wait for the pass. Totally legal. No offsides in open play.

I agree. Women’s rugby is well worth watching. Including the 7s variety.

But a while ago I subscribed to the philosophy of Bill Burr on the topic of the lack of support for women’s sport in general, across the world.

It’s not only men that should be making more of an effort to support women’s sport. You’ll find that most women’s sports are mostly supported by men in the first place.

If, however, more women actually supported women’s’ sports such as rugby - we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

So if there are any women reading this, how about you throw your weight behind your nations women’s rugby team. Buy a jersey. Maybe learn the name of the captain of your women’s team. Spread the word.

Bok rule-benders are changing the game. They deserve respect

You are spot on about World Rugby. Every law change we have had in recent years has been introduced, apparently, to speed up the game which is why we now have matches which last for perhaps 100 minutes, sometimes even longer. If World Rugby were to bass their title on yours, it would be Eggbound.

Just watch those old games, particularly the Lions 1974 series where, when a scrum is called, both packs form up within seconds and… wallop!

Just time Phil Bennett (or whoever it might be) taking a conversion/penalty. On average, 15 seconds, not 60 seconds or 90 seconds. Who the Hell takes 90 seconds to line up a kick?
