Shell-shocked Galthie hits back at false claim directed at France team

France head coach Fabien Galthie has dismissed any accusations that his side were arrogant in a sloppy performance that condemned them to a 26-25 loss to England in round two of the Guinness Six Nations.

Arriving at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium in high spirits following a 43-0 dismantling of Wales in round one, Galthie’s side will bemoan their total of 27 handling errors, some of which when a try would have been guaranteed had a catch been made.

While the greasy conditions can be blamed for Les Bleus’ uncharacteristic performance, there were occasions where passes were forced when they were perhaps not necessary, as well as exhibition-esque offloads that are not traditionally befitting ‘Le Crunch’.

When quizzed after the match whether this was a sign of arrogance by his team, Galthie was blunt in his response.

“Not at all,” he responded when asked. “It’s not their style. They’re not at all an arrogant team.”

With that said, he did identify what his team will need to do to remedy those errors going forward.

“We need more consistency in open spaces and maybe we didn’t need to score immediately but maybe wait for one more ruck.

“It’s part of what we do, it’s part of the work that we do. We are an ambitious team, I think we demonstrated that again tonight.”

France captain Antoine Dupont could not hide his frustration post-match and feels his team-mates could have scored multiple tries in the first-half which would have likely put the game out of sight.

The scrum-half himself was guilty of one of those errors as he spilt a pass from Thomas Ramos with a clear run to the line ahead of him.

“I’m feeling very frustrated, of course,” the Toulouse superstar said.

“Especially with regard to the first half- we could have scored two, three more tries, we didn’t. We reached seven-all at the end of the first half and they took advantage of the opportunities that they had. We could have still done better. We didn’t somehow, which makes it very frustrating.”

Hey, Fabien, maybe you could coach your team to learn to handle high ball. Or it’s going to cost you big games against teams, that know what they’re doing and why.

Just an idea, mate.

As for the arrogance, yeah they were arrogant. And so are you, notoriously. It’s the most defining French trait. Just own it, mate. If you’d approach the match with the same degree of diligence and planning like England did, you’d have won. Just sit down and take the flogging. It’s 100% deserved.

They were not arrogant. Alldritts comments after the Wales match prove it. The 'French are arrogant' trope was invented in English posh schools much like the 'Irish are lucky/stupid', 'Scottish are tight', etc. These tropes are better directed at the people who invented them (posh a$$holes).

Pushing a generalization for a whole country to satisfy your cognitive dissonance narrative. That’s poor.

Any other unsolved frustrations in life?

Off topic..but why does Galthie wear laboratory safety glasses?

I thought they were skydiving goggles. Thanks for clearing that up.

He's cool. I don't rate him as a great coach.

He didn't make plans to mitigate England's pressure game.

Dupont and Ramos under par. Jalibert missing 5 out of 10 tackles…

Strangely poor. The handling errors were frustrating to watch.

The "best player ever" bombing a try with a botched one handed catch summed up a crazy, chaotic game. I feel sorry for the French winger who was brilliant last week and dropped for a clearly unfit Peneaud who also blew a big chance. His kick to set up the other wing was a beauty though, as was the movement for the winning score.

Super Rugby Pacific's greatest season stained by one playoff game

Mate, what TK and Ben Smith are forgetting is that a comp needs more games that matter, and its a balancing act getting that right.

They haven’t understood that having so many teams fighting over the 6th spot is what fueled the back end of the regular season. Not to mention the games to decide the top end of the finals seeding. It would have been a bit flat if the 4 bottom teams were out of the running with a few rounds still to go.

The current finals format is a bit funny to get used to, I agree. But if they sort out the scheduling guff where the BRU vs HUR match could have been a non knockout game, as well as giving more punishment for the lucky looser (dropping them to 4th seed in the semis). The current format creates more meaningful matches than the alternatives.

Some examples of finals formats:

Top 6 14 matches that matter

With the improvements above, the current system creates 6 competitive finals, plus say 8 matches in the regular season that are effectively knockout games. 14 games that definitely matter. Plus some games to decide the finals seeding in there too.

Top 4 10 matches that matter

3 finals matches and say 6 games to fight over the top 4. At a best case you may get 12 crucial games

If offered the choice, the sponsors, the broadcasters, the fans, the players and the all blacks selectors would all take more meaningful games over any alternative format.
