South Africa go for 7-1 bench split as Etzebeth returns for Ireland

South Africa have named a 7-1 split on their bench for their blockbuster fixture against Ireland at the Stade de France on Saturday.
Lock Eben Etzebeth has returned from the shoulder injury that forced him off the pitch against Scotland in round one of the World Cup to start against their Pool B rivals.
Etzebeth left the field in Marseille before half an hour had passed in the Springboks' win over Scotland, and subsequently missed the 76-0 win over Romania as many others did, but the 31-year-old has recovered in time to take the field in Paris against the world number ones.
The sole back on the bench is scrum-half Cobus Reinach, who is fresh from a hat-trick against Romania. That means there is not yet a place in the squad for Handre Pollard, who was called up to the Springboks' squad on Sunday to replace injured hooker Malcolm Marx.
Bongi Mbonambi starts in the No2 jersey in Marx's place, with Deon Fourie starting as the substitute hooker.
Despite naming seven forwards on the bench, veteran No8 Duane Vermeulen has failed to make the squad entirely. Fellow veteran Willie le Roux has been one of the backs to get the axe as well, as Damian Willemse starts at fullback.
"Ireland are a quality team with a strong pack of forwards and talented backs, and they play with a lot of speed, so we know what we have to do to deliver a top-drawer performance for things to go our way,” South Africa head coach Jacques Nienaber said.
“We faced them late last year and we’ve been keeping an eye on their performances this year, so everyone knows what we have to do this weekend.
“We’re fortunate to have a match-fit squad and have been building depth and versatility for a while and believe this is the best combination for this match. For many of these players this is their second or third World Cup, so they know what it takes to perform at this level, and we believe this team has the right balance of players to achieve what we would like to achieve in this match.
“We know it’s going to be a grind of a match and we know we need to pitch up physically and mentally. We also need to start with intensity and stay focused until the final whistle.
“This is a massive game for both sides with an eye to progressing out of our pool, so we need to be extremely accurate in all areas of our game.”

Not if England are going to give him a couple o appearances a year for a 200k top up, he won’t need to break into the top group. This is not the ABs in more ways than just England matching them in loose fowards.
His skill set will be unique though!
Go to commentsThe extent to which rugby pundits in NZ rely on their rose tinted spectacles really baffles me. Anton Lienert-Brown has been a good but nothing more player for a few seasons now. For an experienced player he gives a maddening amount of penalties and yellow cards too so I don’t give him any credit for all that experience.
If you had a clean slate and knew nothing about history, the guy wouldn’t be anywhere near people’s choice for 13 (or 12) if you only watch super rugby the last couple of seasons. Bailyn Sullivan / Billy Proctor / AJ Lam / Tavatavanawai to just just a few have all looked miles better than ALB.
How on earth does that end up with people saying he should be in the squad let alone starting. We have to move on from these type of players - he was never a great player and we have so many alternate options.
There is a group of mediocre players that we need to clear out, or at least try other options. We know how limited that group are, now is the time to see if some other talent can step up (the time was last year, but anyway…).
Jacobson, ALB, Papali’i, Christie, Lord, Havili, Reece. Just move on from them all and try for some upside. Thank god Cane/Perenara have finally moved on because they were in this camp too.
